New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly identified Porto’s Diogo Costa as a key transfer target to bolster the goalkeeping position, expressing reservations about the current options at Stamford Bridge. Alonso, who officially took the helm in early July after signing a four-year contract in May, is keen to reshape the squad to challenge for titles.
Alonso’s Vision for Chelsea
Following a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season, Chelsea is undergoing significant changes under Alonso’s leadership. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder has been actively involved in transfer discussions, aiming to bring in players who align with his vision for the club. Chelsea has already secured the signing of Marco Palestra for £47 million and is expected to strengthen the left-back position, potentially to replace Marc Cucurella.
Goalkeeper Concerns
A primary area of focus for Alonso appears to be the goalkeeping department. Reports suggest that Alonso has doubts about the current capabilities of both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, believing they may not be at the level required for a team aspiring to compete for major honors. Sanchez, despite making errors last season, retained his starting spot, and some analysts have called for his replacement. Meanwhile, Jorgensen has reportedly expressed a desire to leave in search of regular first-team football elsewhere.
Targeting Diogo Costa
According to Portuguese publication Correio da Manha, Alonso has specifically requested that Chelsea pursue Diogo Costa, the captain of Porto and Portugal’s number one goalkeeper. Alonso was reportedly impressed by Costa’s performances prior to the World Cup, and his subsequent displays for Portugal further solidified the manager’s interest. Costa, 26, has spent his entire career at Porto, amassing 48 international caps.
The Transfer Challenge
Securing Costa’s signature presents a significant challenge for Chelsea. While a release clause of 61 million euros (approximately £51 million) exists, the club is reportedly only willing to offer around 40 million euros (£34 million). Porto is unlikely to accept a reduced fee, especially given Costa’s strong World Cup performances and interest from other major European clubs such as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Chelsea may recall a similar situation last summer with Mike Maignan, where they hesitated on a deal, potentially leading to regret.
Alonso’s Optimism
Despite the challenges, Alonso expressed enthusiasm about his new role during his unveiling. He described Chelsea as a club with “great potential” and emphasized his desire to work collaboratively with the sporting directors, players, and staff. “The excitement is very simple, it’s the club, the squad, and the opportunity to come to this great club,” Alonso stated. “I want to be part of this club, working together with the sporting directors, with the players and with the staff around me in Cobham. We want to create excitement [in the team], to have that bond with the supporters and to win games and be successful. I see this as a club with great potential. There is a strong base here already and now we want to keep building to ensure we are competitive on the pitch.”
Looking Ahead
Alonso’s first competitive match as Chelsea manager will be a London derby against Fulham on August 24th. The club’s transfer activity throughout the summer window will be crucial in determining their ability to meet Alonso’s expectations and return to the top tier of English football.
