Phil Parkinson, manager of Wrexham, will receive the Freedom of Wrexham County Borough today. He has led the club to three consecutive promotions since joining in the summer of 2021.
Historic Promotions and Community Impact
Councillors unanimously approved the honor following the team’s promotion to the Championship last year. Parkinson highlighted the significance in a recent statement: “It’s an amazing honour for myself and my family to be given that award and I look forward to going down there on Tuesday. One of the key parts of this job and being part of this story over the last five years is the impact on the local community. I’ve enjoyed being a part of that and meeting people in the business world around the town and it’s a real honour for me to be down there on Tuesday.”
Ceremony Details
The official ceremony takes place at Wrexham Guildhall at 15:00 BST, where Parkinson will sign the documents.
Parkinson’s Role in Wrexham’s Rise
Parkinson arrived at the club five months after actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney acquired it. Under his leadership, Wrexham climbed from the National League in the fifth tier to the Championship. He features prominently in the acclaimed documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, set for at least three more seasons.
Despite recent losses to Southampton and Birmingham City, Wrexham holds seventh place in the Championship standings. They trail the top six by four points with four matches remaining, keeping playoff hopes alive.
