Shakira captivated a massive crowd of two million fans during a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. The Colombian superstar took the stage around 11 p.m. as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour, named after her 2024 album.
Emotional Reflections and Hit Performances
Reflecting on her early days in Brazil, Shakira shared: “I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you. And now look at this. Life is magical.” She delivered fan favorites including Hips Don’t Lie, La Tortura, and La Bicicleta, closing with BZRP Music Sessions #53/66, a track tied to her separation from Gerard Piqué.
“Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser,” Shakira added during the show.
Stunning Visuals and Crowd Energy
The performance featured Brazil-themed outfit changes, with Shakira waving a Brazilian flag across the stage. The event concluded with a spectacular fireworks display. Screens lined the beach to ensure all attendees enjoyed the view.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere announced on X that two million people attended, stating: “The She-Wolf made history in Rio.”
Economic Boost for Rio
The free concert aligns with City Hall’s strategy to stimulate the local economy post-Carnival and New Year’s, ahead of June’s Saint John’s Day festivities. “For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city,” Cavaliere explained. He noted the investment would yield a 40-fold financial return.
A City Hall and Riotur study projects the event will generate 777 million reais, approximately £114 million.
Previous Mega-Shows on Copacabana
Shakira’s gig follows Lady Gaga’s 2.1 million-attendee concert last year and Madonna’s 1.6 million-fan show in 2024, cementing Copacabana as a venue for record-breaking performances.
Tragic Incident During Setup
A crew member died while assembling stage structures. Event organizers stated: “First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the fire department was immediately called to transport the injured person. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital. At this time, we are offering our full support, comfort and solidarity to the company responsible, its team and the victim’s family.”
The state fire brigade reported the victim suffered severe crushing injuries to the lower limbs after getting trapped in a lifting system.
Tour Highlights and Career Legacy
Shakira hyped the event as “the biggest show on the planet” and “the most dreamed-of concert of my life.” Her tour, grossing $421.6 million across 122 dates, heads next to California’s Intuit Dome in Inglewood on June 13.
With over 125 million records sold worldwide and 80.7 million monthly Spotify listeners, Shakira launched her career at 13 after signing with Sony Music Colombia. Global breakthrough came with 2001’s Laundry Service and Whenever, Wherever.
