Despite boasting Canada’s lowest unemployment rate, a significant portion of Saskatchewan’s youth — just over 20 percent — are living in poverty. As economic pressures intensify, concerns are mounting that provincial social assistance programs are insufficient to meet basic living costs.

Poverty Amidst Economic Strength

The stark contrast between low unemployment and high child poverty rates in Saskatchewan is drawing attention. Analysts point to a lack of a comprehensive anti-poverty strategy as a key factor contributing to these persistent issues.

Expert Analysis on Social Assistance Shortcomings

According to senior researcher Evelyn Adams at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the current statistics are not unexpected. Adams stated that the findings reflect a long-standing issue where social assistance rates have not kept pace with the rising cost of living.

“The numbers we’re seeing are not surprising given the absence of a dedicated, province-wide anti-poverty strategy,” Adams commented. “When social assistance is not designed to provide a basic standard of living, we inevitably see these outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations like children.”

Calls for Strategic Intervention

Organizations like Food Banks Canada are highlighting the inadequacy of current support systems. Their analysis suggests that without substantial adjustments to social assistance, families will continue to struggle to afford necessities, even with a strong job market.

The province’s performance in addressing poverty has been formally graded, with the current ‘D+’ indicating a need for more robust and targeted interventions. This evaluation underscores the urgency for policy makers to develop and implement effective strategies to combat poverty and ensure a basic standard of living for all residents.
