Officer Arrested for Alleged Drunk Driving After Being Honored for Enforcement
A police officer in Oak Ridge North, Texas, who was previously recognized for his efforts in combating drunk driving, has himself been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI). Officer Zachery Castenon was taken into custody on Sunday following a reports a colleague who allegedly detected the odor of alcohol on him.
Sources indicate that upon Officer Castenon’s arrival at the station, another Oak Ridge North Police Department officer noted the presence of alcohol. At the time of the report, Castenon had not yet begun any patrol duties.
Past Recognition for Drunk Driving Enforcement
Castenon’s arrest comes as a stark contrast to his recent accolades. He had been honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) with the ‘Distinguished Enforcement Hero award’ in June 2024. This recognition stemmed from his leadership in impaired-driving arrests within his department, where he recorded 66 such offenses.
Further underscoring his previous commitment to DWI enforcement, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office named Castenon an ‘Exemplary DWI Officer’ at its annual Vehicular Crimes Awards ceremony in February 2025. He joined the Oak Ridge North Police Department in 2022.
Investigation and Employment Status
Following the colleague’s report, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was notified and has taken over the investigation into the incident. Officer Castenon was subsequently booked into the Montgomery County Jail on the DWI charge.
The City of Oak Ridge North confirmed that Castenon is no longer employed by the department. In a statement, the city acknowledged the ongoing investigation by the DPS and the criminal justice process, stating that it would not be providing further comment at this time.
Commitment to Accountability
The department emphasized that the allegations against Castenon do not represent the broader values and dedication of its officers. “The actions of one individual do not reflect the professionalism, integrity, and dedication demonstrated daily by the men and women of the Oak Ridge North Police Department,” the statement read.
The city also expressed its appreciation for the actions of department personnel in promptly reporting the concern and adhering to established procedures to ensure an independent investigation. The city reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability and pledged continued cooperation with all relevant authorities.
