Veteran Journalist Departs After Workplace Confrontation

A significant personnel shift has occurred at CBS following a contentious interaction between long-serving journalist Scott Pelley and the newly appointed executive producer of “60 Minutes,” Nick Bilton. Bilton, who recently assumed the role, has limited experience in broadcast television, having previously worked as a columnist for The New York Times.

Pelley, a fixture at CBS for 37 years, joined the network as a reporter in 1989. His extensive career includes serving as chief White House correspondent from 1997 to 1999 and as the anchor of the “CBS Evening News” from 2011 to 2017. The 68-year-old has also been a correspondent for “60 Minutes” since 2004.

Pelley’s dismissal reportedly stems from a disagreement with network executives, including Bilton. In a letter addressed to Pelley, Bilton stated, “Your antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear. And I have heard you. I therefore write on behalf of CBS News to inform you that your employment with CBS is terminated effective immediately.”

Reports indicate that Pelley publicly voiced his criticism during a network meeting on Monday. He reportedly challenged Bilton’s decision to dismiss Tanya Simon, the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” along with correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Pelley is also quoted as accusing editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” “60 Minutes,” asserting that she lacks passion for the organization and was appointed with the intention of dismantling it. He further questioned Weiss’s qualifications for the role and described Bilton’s as “slender,” citing his background in tech journalism. Pelley allegedly contrasted Weiss’s changes at “CBS Evening News” as “catastrophic,” expressing doubt about the success of any new initiatives.

Bilton is said to have responded by outlining his intention to meet with the team to allay concerns about drastic program changes. Subsequent reports suggest Pelley met with CBS executives on Tuesday to discuss his remarks from the previous meeting.

In a staff email following these discussions, Bilton claimed Pelley was unresponsive to his attempts at reconciliation. He wrote, “I know how much Scott meant to you, and I don’t say this lightly. I made repeated attempts to have direct conversations with him over the weekend, and this afternoon I tried to find common ground. That was not the path Scott chose.”

Cecilia Vega, a former colleague, shared a statement suggesting her departure was due to alleged pressures to incorporate political bias into reporting. “In recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories,” Vega stated. “Reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions.” She characterized these actions as “censorship, both imposed and self-driven,” and warned of the dangers to both the program and democracy.

CBS has undergone significant transformations since Skydance Media acquired the company in 2025, with several veteran journalists departing in protest of Weiss’s appointment as editor-in-chief. Weiss previously expressed enthusiasm for Bilton’s leadership, highlighting his insights into how technological advancements are reshaping information consumption, stating, “He has been consistently prescient about the ways that the technological revolution that we’re living through is upending the way that we consume storytelling and information. He has been the one to see the tsunami before the wave hits the rest of us.”
