Spielberg’s “Close Encounters” Resonates with Modern UAP Revelations

Steven Spielberg’s 1977 science fiction masterpiece, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, continues to hold a powerful relevance, tapping into enduring public skepticism regarding government transparency on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). This classic film’s themes are notably echoed in Spielberg’s upcoming movie, Disclosure Day, which directly confronts the subject of extraterrestrial encounters and official cover-ups.

The anticipation surrounding Disclosure Day, particularly after trailers confirmed its focus on extraterrestrials, sparked widespread speculation online about a potential connection to Close Encounters. While the film’s promotional materials playfully clarify it is “not a sequel,” its thematic and narrative links are undeniable. Emily Blunt, a star of Disclosure Day, has described the new film as a continuation, akin to a “third act” alongside Close Encounters and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Spielberg himself has drawn parallels between the films, expressing a deepened conviction about humanity not being alone in the universe. “I’m even more inclined now than I was when I made Close Encounters to really believe that we’re not the only intelligent civilisation in the Universe,” he stated in a promotional clip.

Conspiracy Theories and Government Secrecy

Beyond the obvious presence of friendly extraterrestrial visitors, a less apparent but crucial connection between Close Encounters and Disclosure Day lies in their shared exploration of conspiracy theories surrounding government concealment of UFO and UAP evidence. These theories, deeply rooted in the alleged 1947 Roswell incident, have grown in intensity and permeated mainstream discourse.

The current climate, marked by recent governmental disclosures concerning UAP sightings, amplifies the timeliness of Close Encounters. The film serves as a critical lens through which to understand Disclosure Day‘s central theme: the revelation of truth about UAPs.

Visually stunning and thematically rich, Close Encounters remains a testament to Spielberg’s ambitious filmmaking. Iconic scenes, such as Richard Dreyfuss’s character, Roy Neary, sculpting mashed potatoes into the shape of Devils Tower – the future landing site of a UFO – are indelibly etched in cinematic history. The otherworldly arrival of the alien mothership and its occupants, and Roy’s subsequent departure into space, remain captivating.

The “UFOs and Watergate” Narrative

What particularly stands out upon rewatching Close Encounters today is its portrayal of governmental efforts to suppress public knowledge of extraterrestrial encounters. In one scene, an Air Force officer dismisses witnesses’ claims of seeing a craft from space. The film further illustrates official deception through fabricated news reports of a train derailment and chemical leak to justify a large-scale evacuation near Devils Tower, a narrative designed to mask a clandestine military operation preparing for an alien landing.

The film depicts a society grappling with vast governmental secrecy. Roy Neary’s quest for truth mirrors the struggles of ordinary citizens facing official obfuscation. Spielberg himself initially conceived the film as “UFOs and Watergate,” a sentiment that underscores the deep-seated distrust in authority figures and institutions.

Even in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Spielberg subtly weaves in the theme of government attempts to control information about extraterrestrials, with agents swarming the home of the family harboring the alien visitor.

Art Reflecting Reality

Spielberg’s fictional narratives often mirror real-world events and anxieties. Following the release of Close Encounters, a notable increase in reported UFO sightings occurred, with many individuals feeling empowered to share previously suppressed accounts. This phenomenon aligns with the historical reality of US government investigations into UFOs, which date back to the Roswell incident.

The New York Times’ 2017 report on “The Pentagon’s Mysterious UFO Program,” revealing secret Defense Department funding for UAP studies, brought to light decades of governmental engagement with the phenomenon. This revelation, along with subsequent reports the Pentagon and analyses in publications like The Wall Street Journal, has fueled ongoing public interest, despite a lack of definitive proof of alien visitations.

The recent release of a Defense Department report, which some observers noted contained easily explainable phenomena, has not dampened the enthusiasm of true believers. One individual remarked at the time of the report’s release, “The stuff that they’re releasing is stuff we’ve known for, like, forever, But I’m very hopeful that we’re heading in the right direction.”

Disclosure Day: A Modern Conspiracy Thriller

Disclosure Day arrives at a time when public trust in governmental honesty and the nature of truth itself is being questioned. The film is described as an action movie and a sci-fi story, but fundamentally, it operates as a conspiracy thriller, reminiscent of post-Watergate cinema.

The narrative centers on Daniel, a whistleblower working for Wardex, a clandestine agency affiliated with the Defense Department. As trailers suggest, the government has allegedly accumulated decades of evidence pertaining to extraterrestrial encounters. Daniel’s journey to expose this truth places him in peril from Wardex operatives determined to silence him.

The film draws clear inspiration from 1970s thrillers, such as Three Days of the Condor. Hugo, a fellow Wardex whistleblower portrayed by Colman Domingo, delivers a powerful line that encapsulates the film’s core message: “This 79-year terror campaign of obfuscation, lies and cover-up has to end!”

Spielberg has highlighted a growing global fascination with the question of whether humanity is alone in the universe. “And if someone knows we’re not alone, why haven’t we been told?” he posed in a teaser, echoing the central mystery that drives both Close Encounters and Disclosure Day.

Disclosure Day is slated for release on June 12.
