Congresswoman Criticizes Presidential Attendance Amidst Watch Party Controversy

New York City is abuzz with anticipation for Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, but a shadow has been cast over the festivities due to the impending visit of President Donald Trump. His attendance, a historic first for a sitting president at an NBA Finals contest, has drawn sharp criticism from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who argues that his presence is disrupting the fan experience.

Watch Parties Canceled Due to Security Concerns

The core of the controversy lies in the cancellation of outdoor watch parties surrounding Madison Square Garden. Thousands of fans had previously gathered at these events for Games 1 and 2, creating a vibrant atmosphere. However, officials have confirmed that these public celebrations will not be permitted for Game 3, citing heightened security protocols necessary for the presidential visit. This decision has led to a backlash from fans and elected officials alike.

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez voiced her strong disapproval on social media, stating, “It already has been [a vibe killer]! Now the city has to shut down all the watch parties outside of the arena, that have been the source of so much fun.” She added, “All of that is going to get shut down tomorrow because Trump wants to show up.”

Politician’s Perspective on Event Attendance

Elaborating on her stance, Ocasio-Cortez shared her personal philosophy regarding political figures attending public events. She explained, “As a politician, I have gone to my fair amount of sports games – but there are just some things that you don’t want to go [to], either to jinx it or just in general.” She further emphasized, “Sometimes the accommodations that are required – [such as] the security for you to show up – are just not worth shutting down the fun for other people. Sometimes you decide not to go to things so that other people can enjoy it.”

Conflicting Statements Emerge Over Watch Party Decision

The situation surrounding the watch parties became further muddled with seemingly contradictory statements from law enforcement and Madison Square Garden officials. Initially, reports suggested the watch parties could proceed. However, a subsequent statement from the NYPD confirmed, “There will be no watch party outside MSG. This decision was made in coordination with the Secret Service.” The NYPD indicated that alternative viewing locations were being considered.

In a surprising turn, Madison Square Garden issued its own statement, asserting that the decision to cancel the watch party was not directly linked to President Trump’s attendance. According to their statement, the permit for the Plaza33 Game 3 watch party was denied by the City’s permitting office in consultation with the NYPD. They also noted that the White House would confirm the decision was not about the President and that NYPD Commissioner Tisch was planning additional street closures.

However, the NYPD quickly reiterated its position, doubling down on the assertion that the cancellation was a direct result of the presidential visit. Their latest statement clarified, “There will be no watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 only. This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit. We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4.”

Extensive Security Measures Planned for Game 3

The upcoming game is expected to be accompanied by an unprecedented level of security. Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service officers and agents will be on duty, supported by thousands of NYPD personnel. A significant perimeter is anticipated around Madison Square Garden, with reports indicating potential closures of Seventh and Eighth Avenue corridors, impacting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic in a densely populated area of Midtown Manhattan.

Access to the immediate vicinity of the arena will be restricted, with only ticketed attendees permitted entry. Security screening for fans is described as being more rigorous than typical. Furthermore, a strict bag policy will be enforced, prohibiting all bags, including purses and backpacks, of any size. Attendees are strongly advised to leave personal belongings at home to avoid being denied entry.

Security checkpoints are scheduled to open at 6:30 PM, a full two hours before the game’s scheduled 8:30 PM tip-off. Officials are encouraging attendees to arrive early to navigate what could be exceptionally long queues.
