Bondi Shooting Suspect Faces 19 New Charges

Naveed Akram, the suspect in the alleged Bondi mass shooting, has been charged with an additional 19 offenses. The Downing Centre Local Court was informed on Wednesday that documentation for these new charges has been formally submitted.

Details of New Charges

The updated charges consist of ten counts of ‘shoot with intent to murder’, six counts of discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest, and three counts of causing wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. These new allegations significantly increase the total number of charges Akram is facing.

Existing Charges and Investigation Progress

Akram is already facing 59 charges related to the alleged incident in Sydney’s eastern suburbs that resulted in 15 fatalities in December. These existing charges include 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and terrorism-related offenses.

During the court hearing, the Commonwealth Director’s representative indicated that the case is progressing steadily towards the preparation of a charge certificate. She noted the filing of 19 additional court attendance notices and that investigators are currently reviewing approximately 230,000 images from CCTV footage and other devices. These materials are believed to be linked to the accused, and some require translation.

Next Court Appearance and Custody

Naveed Akram is scheduled to appear in court again on August 12. He remains in custody at Goulburn Supermax, Australia’s highest-security prison.
