Bridge Opening Uncertain Amidst Official Statements
Prime Minister Mark Carney has tempered expectations regarding the imminent opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a critical new link connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit. Despite a ribbon-cutting ceremony reportedly scheduled for Friday, the timeline for public access remains fluid.
“Everyone’s working hard to make sure the bridge is open as soon as possible,” Carney stated on Wednesday, en route to a cabinet meeting. He further commented, “There’s no big drama if it takes a little longer, it’ll take a little longer.”
Background and Previous Announcements
Carney’s remarks follow his confirmation on Tuesday that the bridge, a $6.4 billion project financed by the Canadian federal government, was slated for an official opening this week. The Prime Minister had previously hailed the bridge as a “symbol” of bilateral cooperation between Canada and the United States.
Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed opposition to the bridge’s opening, citing a lack of compensation as his reason. At that time, Carney indicated that Trump had tasked U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra with a role in facilitating discussions around the bridge.
Under the current financial agreement, Canada is set to retain all toll revenue until the project’s financing costs are recouped. Following this period, the state of Michigan will share equally in the profits generated by the bridge.
Official Reactions and Doubts
When questioned about the bridge’s opening status on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy declined to provide a comment. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also expressed skepticism regarding the planned opening date on Tuesday, with the White House confirming that President Trump’s stance on the bridge had not shifted.
“Let’s see if it opens or not,” Ford told reporters in Washington. “Hopefully it will, if they say it’s going to open. I’m just hearing two stories.”
Project Details and Toll Information
Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge commenced in 2018, with the aim of alleviating congestion on the existing Ambassador Bridge, which currently handles over a quarter of all trade between Canada and the U.S.
In March, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced the toll rates for the new crossing. Passenger vehicles are expected to pay $8 CAD/$5.75 USD per crossing, while commercial trucks and larger vehicles will be charged $12 CAD/$8.75 USD per axle. The authority also introduced a discount program, “Breakaway,” which reduces the cost for commercial vehicles to $9.60 CAD/$6.90 USD per axle and for passenger vehicles to $6 CAD/$4.35 USD per crossing.
For comparison, current toll rates for the Ambassador Bridge, as of April, are $10.00 USD/$14.00 CAD per crossing for passenger vehicles and $15.00-$20.00 USD per axle for commercial vehicles. Matthew Maroun, the owner of the Ambassador Bridge, has reportedly opposed the construction of the new corridor, with his company, the Detroit International Bridge Company Inc., actively lobbying the U.S. government on the matter.
