Singer Criticized for ‘Cruel’ Aquatic Display
Musician Jason Derulo is facing widespread criticism for his home aquarium, which reportedly houses a shark and a manta ray. Online commentators have expressed outrage over the display, with many labeling the setup as cruel and inhumane.
Concerns Raised Over Animal Welfare
The controversy erupted on the social media platform Reddit, where users decried the confined living conditions for the aquatic animals. Many argued that the aquarium floor setup, showcased in a video of Derulo giving a tour, provides inadequate space and enrichment for the creatures.
Online discussions highlighted concerns that the shark and manta ray are condemned to a “torturous existence” in an undersized habitat, suggesting it serves only for the singer’s vanity. One user vociferously stated, “There is absolutely no reason to do this,” adding a plea for the artist to be reported.
Another commenter described the underground aquarium as something that “should absolutely be illegal,” questioning Derulo’s “audacity to show it off.” The sentiment was echoed by numerous individuals who pointed out the lack of hiding places for the animals from people, bright lights, or loud noises. “There’s not even anything enriching in there,” one user lamented, comparing it unfavorably to their “childhood goldfish had a better setup.”
Specific Animal Welfare Issues Cited
Concerns were specifically raised about the number of sharks and the presence of multiple stingrays within what was described as a “kiddie size swimming pool.” Critics emphasized that these are living creatures, not mere decorations, and that the tank lacks any elements mimicking a natural habitat. The assertion that the space is insufficient for even one shark, let alone other marine life, was a recurring theme.
Some users expressed frustration with the perceived dismissal of aquatic animals’ needs, stating, “They’re just fish” is an unacceptable viewpoint when faced with such displays. The idea of using artificial elements like robot fish or visual effects for aesthetic purposes was suggested as a more humane alternative.
Derulo’s Past Comments on Aquarium Dreams
In a previous interview, Derulo had spoken about his long-held desire for a shark tank in his home. He detailed his vision of creating a “really large one on the floor” to Graham Bensinger. During that conversation, he confirmed the presence of a “forest shark” and a stingray in the aquarium.
Derulo also revealed that the shark did not “want to coexist” with other fish that were initially introduced. He explained, “The shark, they don’t want to coexist. They want to eat them, so… they ate all the fish, yeah.”
