Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as a contender in the pursuit of highly-rated West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who is reportedly valued at £85 million. The 21-year-old Portuguese talent has attracted significant interest from several major European clubs this summer, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Intensifying Transfer Market for Young Midfielder
The growing interest in Fernandes presents a potential financial windfall for West Ham United. The club is aiming to secure approximately £85 million from his transfer before the June 30 accounting deadline. This potential sale comes at a critical juncture for West Ham, as they face mounting financial pressures following their relegation to the Championship.
Financial Considerations Drive Club Decisions
While Daniel Kretinsky, who is poised to become West Ham’s largest shareholder, has indicated that player sales are not a necessity, the club’s financial situation necessitates careful consideration. Losses have reportedly risen to £104.2 million in the previous financial year, and a significant deficit is anticipated for the 2025-26 period. Profit and sustainability regulations limit losses to £105 million over a three-year span, underscoring the importance of player trading.
Tottenham’s Squad Overhaul
Tottenham, under the guidance of manager Roberto De Zerbi, are actively reshaping their squad ahead of the upcoming season. The club has already secured the signing of defender Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million from Brighton. Additionally, Scotland captain Andy Robertson and Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi have joined on free transfers as part of this extensive squad overhaul.
Competition for Signings
Tottenham has also reportedly engaged in discussions with the camp of Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. However, they face competition from other clubs, including Manchester City, who are exploring Tonali as a secondary option for their midfield targets.
Manchester United’s Stance on Fernandes
Reports indicate that Manchester United were initially leading the race for Fernandes. However, the club has reportedly opted against engaging in a bidding war for other targets, suggesting a strategic approach to their transfer strategy. While Manchester United has not yet submitted a formal offer for Fernandes, preliminary discussions with his representatives have occurred. It is understood that personal terms are unlikely to be an obstacle, with the prospect of Champions League football next season serving as a significant attraction.
Fernandes’s Rising Profile
Despite not being included in Portugal’s World Cup squad, Mateus Fernandes is recognized as one of Europe’s most promising midfield prospects. In the 2025-26 season, he contributed five goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for West Ham. He was also a contender for the club’s Player of the Season award, which ultimately went to defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Fernandes’s contract with West Ham extends until 2030, and there is no release clause currently stipulated in the agreement.
