A significant historical monument in Memramcook, New Brunswick, has been successfully returned to its rightful place after being toppled by suspected vandals. The bronze statue, honoring Père Camille Lefebvre, a pivotal figure in Acadian history and education, was reinstated on its base earlier this month, following the incident that occurred in late August. The village administration expressed dismay over the act, emphasizing the statue’s deep cultural and historical importance to the community and the broader Acadian identity.

Historical Significance of Père Camille Lefebvre

The statue, originally erected in 1914, commemorates Père Camille Lefebvre, whose contributions to French-language education in Acadie were profound. Lefebvre is widely recognized as the founder of the Collège Saint-Joseph, an institution that played a crucial role in fostering higher education and preserving the French language in the region during the 1860s and beyond. His dedication to educational advancement has left an indelible mark on Acadian heritage, making the statue a cherished symbol for the residents of Memramcook and Acadians across the Maritimes.

The Vandalism Incident

In August, the village of Memramcook discovered the statue lying on the ground, an act attributed to vandalism. Village officials, including Mayor Maxime O. Bourgeois, voiced their shock and disappointment. “The people of Memramcook are very attached to Père Lefebvre,” Mayor Bourgeois stated. “His statue is an important heritage symbol for us, and l’Acadie would not be as we know it without his dedication to French-language education in the 1860s. We hope that light will be shed on this incident, which deeply upsets us.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities determined that the statue was likely pushed off its base sometime between 7:35 p.m. on August 25 and 8:10 a.m. on August 26. As part of their inquiry, the Sackville RCMP issued an appeal for information, specifically seeking details about a white 2019-2020 Dodge Ram truck that may be connected to the event.

Restoration and Community Response

Following the investigation and the successful recovery of the statue, a collaborative effort was undertaken to restore it to its original position. The village announced the statue’s return on September 1, coinciding with the start of the academic year. This timing was particularly poignant, given Père Lefebvre’s legacy as an educator.

The restoration was made possible through the generous support and expertise of several local businesses:

  • J.L. Breau Crane Rentals Ltd.
  • BSM Services (1998) Ltd.
  • Maritime Hydraulics

The village expressed its gratitude to these companies for their crucial role in the statue’s restoration. “Père Lefebvre is back! Just in time for the start of the school year,” the village shared on social media. “We thank all those who took care of the restoration of the statue of this great believer of higher education in Acadie.” The successful reinstatement of the monument was met with relief and appreciation from the community, reinforcing its status as a vital piece of local heritage.

Ongoing Investigation

Despite the successful restoration of the statue, the RCMP’s investigation into the vandalism remains active. Authorities continue to seek any information that could help identify the individuals responsible for damaging the historical monument. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting cultural heritage sites and the need for community vigilance.

Conclusion

The return of the Père Camille Lefebvre statue to its base in Memramcook marks a significant moment for the village and the Acadian community. It underscores the enduring respect for historical figures like Lefebvre and the collective effort to preserve cultural landmarks. While the physical monument has been restored, the investigation continues, with hopes that accountability will be established for the act of vandalism. The event highlights the community’s resilience and commitment to honoring its past.
