England Players Trade Soccer Cleats for Country Flair in Kansas
England’s national football team players are experiencing a different kind of rhythm off the pitch, swapping their usual football boots for cowboy boots as they unwind in Kansas over the Father’s Day weekend. Following a triumphant 4-2 World Cup opening victory against Croatia, the squad was granted a day off to reconnect with their families.
A Western Welcome and Family Reunions
For some, the downtime included immersing themselves in local culture. Defender Dan Burn and captain Harry Kane were spotted attending a country music concert. Burn shared his enthusiasm for the experience, detailing his choice of attire: “I put on the cowboy hat and boots,” he stated, adding, “I bought the hats and boots yesterday. I got kitted out, I thought if you are going to do it, then do it properly.” He expressed hope that no photographic evidence of his country ensemble would surface.
Earlier in the weekend, Jude Bellingham treated his influencer girlfriend and parents to lunch at Clay and Fire, a popular Middle Eastern restaurant in Kansas City. The restaurant’s owner, Adam Jones, recounted the unexpected visit: “I had no idea who he was but some Brazilian customers in at the time recognised him and were very excited about it.” Jones mentioned that Bellingham enjoyed his meal and expressed interest in returning with teammates.
Downtime Activities and Family Support
The team’s day off allowed for a variety of activities. Players engaged in a baseball game during a training session, with Declan Rice notably showcasing his athleticism as a catcher. Other team members were seen enjoying a game of padel, while some visited a local entertainment complex.
Families of the players were permitted to join them, with permission granted by manager Thomas Tuchel, allowing for precious time together after the team’s demanding pre-tournament camp and initial victory. Wives and children flew in from Dallas to join their partners, with many opting for a stroll in a nearby park or visiting a children’s play area.
For some, the weekend held personal significance. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s wife, Megan, celebrated her wedding anniversary, receiving a heartfelt message and roses from her husband. Despite a difficult start to her World Cup experience, which included lost luggage, the family day provided a welcome respite.
A Shift in WAG Culture
The current approach to family involvement appears to be a departure from the past. Unlike the highly publicized and at times controversial presence of partners during the 2006 World Cup, the current generation of WAGs are observed to maintain a more low-key profile, often sharing lifestyle content on social media.
While some families are based in Miami, a considerable distance from the team’s current location, others have joined in Kansas. The team hotel was not accessible for overnight stays for families, who were accommodated at a separate luxury spa establishment. Manager Tuchel is reportedly supportive of family time, though the extensive travel distances and tight schedules present ongoing logistical challenges for reunions.
The squad’s focus now returns to the upcoming matches, with the players having savored a unique blend of American hospitality and cherished family moments in Kansas.
