A Premium Journey Above the Clouds

Long-haul flights often feel like a test of endurance, a series of challenges from airport security to cramped seating. However, an invitation to experience Etihad’s Business Class from London to Cambodia, with a stopover in Abu Dhabi, promised a different kind of journey. The expectation was to be impressed by luxury, but the reality was a swift acclimation to an elevated travel standard.

Within an hour of arriving at Heathrow, the experience began with Champagne and an Arabic mezze breakfast, prompting a contemplation of the merits of ever returning to economy class. This luxurious immersion preceded even boarding the aircraft.

Seamless Airport Experience and A380 Grandeur

Following a delightful interlude in Etihad’s Business Class lounge, complete with a mezze breakfast, a fast-track security pass expedited the journey to the gate. The initial leg of the journey to Abu Dhabi was aboard Etihad’s iconic double-decker Airbus A380. This aircraft, a celebrated name in aviation, draws attention from onlookers, with its entire upper deck dedicated to premium passengers, including Business Class, First Class, and the opulent three-room suite known as The Residence.

A dedicated boarding tunnel and the exclusive use of the upper deck contribute to a distinct sense of occasion. The cabin’s interior design, featuring warm browns and creamy tones, evokes a cozy, inviting atmosphere rather than a corporate feel. The seats themselves are remarkably spacious, measuring 20 inches wide and converting into a fully flat bed. Storage is abundant, and the intuitive controls allow for seamless transitions between upright, reclined, and bed modes with a single touch.

Culinary Delights and Thoughtful Amenities

Upon boarding, passengers are greeted with a selection of beverages, including Champagne. The choice of Telmont Champagne for breakfast was a highlight, served in an Armani/Casa flute. This collaboration with the Italian fashion house extends to much of the tableware, bedding, and cabin furnishings.

The amenity kit, presented in a stylish leather-look pouch, contains Espa products. The hydrating facial mist, in particular, proved to be a frequently used item throughout the flight. Etihad’s inflight dining lives up to its reputation. The meal service featured restaurant-quality dishes, starting with Arabic mezze followed by grilled cod with herb potatoes and brown shrimp butter. The presentation was exquisite, the cooking precise, and the flavors were rich. A full-bodied Bordeaux from the airline’s wine list complemented the meal perfectly, creating a memorable dining experience at 35,000 feet.

Exceptional Sleep and Unforgettable Service

The promise of sleep in Business Class can vary, but Etihad’s seats deliver. The ability to stretch out and fall asleep quickly, waking up several hours later feeling refreshed, significantly mitigates the fatigue typically associated with long-haul travel. Arriving at the destination after a seven-hour flight feeling revitalized felt remarkably unusual.

One testimonial from @loungeguru detailed an extensive 15-hour dining experience on an Etihad Airbus A350 Business Class flight from Abu Dhabi to New York. The journey began with a welcome drink and continued with a culinary journey featuring Arabic mezze, the signature Butterfly Effect drink, a perfectly cooked steak, and the highly praised steak and cheese breakfast sandwich. The reviewer emphasized that this was more than just airline food; it was a comprehensive dining experience. The onboard WiFi also proved reliable, allowing for a video call home at cruising altitude. The crew’s attentiveness and thoughtfulness were particularly noted, with a personalized postcard expressing gratitude for the journey leaving a lasting impression.

Minor Drawbacks in an Otherwise Stellar Experience

While the experience was overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points detracted from absolute perfection. Unlike economy passengers, Business Class travelers cannot control the airflow above their seats, leading to fluctuations in cabin temperature. The bathrooms, while stylish, featured lighting that leaned more towards a trendy cocktail bar than a practical lavatory, and while the entertainment system offered a broad selection, some libraries were more extensive.

Continued Excellence on Connecting Flights

The connecting flights between Abu Dhabi and Phnom Penh utilized a Boeing 787-9. Despite the smaller aircraft, the premium experience remained largely consistent. The menus offered variety on each flight, allowing for the sampling of different dishes, including a standout bowl of seafood Hokkien noodles. The cocktails were also noteworthy, with Etihad’s Old Fashioned being particularly impressive.

The Verdict: A Journey Worth Cherishing

By the time of arrival in Cambodia, the strong following Etihad commands became clear. The combination of comfortable seating, excellent cuisine, and a service that balances attentiveness with an effortless demeanor makes even the longest journeys feel surprisingly manageable. While Cambodia offered a memorable destination, the flight itself came remarkably close to being an equally significant part of the travel experience.
