Track star Amy Hunt is planning an extensive period of rest and recovery, humorously dubbed an ‘eight-week hibernation,’ following her remarkable achievement of winning four gold medals at the European Championships held in Birmingham. The 24-year-old Cambridge University graduate, who secured individual golds in the 100m and 200m races, and was a key part of the victorious women’s and mixed 4x100m relay teams, celebrated her success with a glass of champagne. However, Hunt is not immediately stepping away from competition, with a few weeks remaining in the Diamond League season and the World Ultimate Championships in Budapest on the horizon.

A Euphoric Home Triumph

Reflecting on her performance, Hunt described the experience as ‘euphoric’ and like ‘dreamland,’ particularly appreciating the advantage of competing at home with strong crowd support. She emphasized the significance of representing Great Britain on home soil, stating, ‘I have such a pride in competing for Great Britain on a Great British stage. We really put the great in Great Britain.’ This sentiment underscores the pride and national representation felt during the championships.

Hunt shared her mindset heading into the races, noting, ‘Any time you line up at a race, you have to believe you’ll win no matter what.’ She acknowledged the highly competitive nature of professional athletics, describing it as a ‘dog eat dog world’ that requires unwavering confidence. The success in the relays was a particular highlight, with Hunt expressing gratitude for her teammates, stating, ‘I was lucky I got to cap off the relays with incredible people.’

Britain’s Sprint Dominance

The British sprint team’s performance at the championships was exceptional, with Hunt highlighting their collective success. ‘We were the sprint nation at this Championships. We cleaned up nearly every medal at the sprints,’ she observed. This dominance reflects a strong national program and a competitive spirit that allows British athletes to compete effectively against global powerhouses like the United States. ‘We hold our weight on a global stage – we go toe-to-toe with the Americans. It’s great to see that programme come together,’ Hunt added.

The motivational impact of the coaching staff was also a significant factor. Hunt mentioned the coaches’ team speeches as a source of inspiration, saying, ‘If you heard our coaches’ team speeches, you’d want to go to war for them too.’ The aggressive strategy for the relays, aiming to ‘break their hearts,’ clearly fueled the team’s determination and readiness.

The Importance of Rest and Family

Looking ahead, Hunt outlined her strategy for unwinding after a demanding season. Her preferred method of switching off involves spending quality time with her family. Despite training in Padova, Italy, she doesn’t get to see her family frequently. ‘My way of switching off is spending time with my family,’ she explained. Relaxing activities include spending time at home with her dog and her sister, who recently qualified as a nurse.

The prospect of an extended break is a welcome one. Hunt’s coach provides an eight-week off-season, which she eagerly anticipates. ‘My coach gives us eight weeks off – he’s very benevolent. I have eight weeks of hibernation!’ she exclaimed, looking forward to a period of rest and rejuvenation before the next competitive cycle.

Looking Up to Role Models

A significant part of Hunt’s success involved competing in the women’s 4x100m relay alongside Dina Asher-Smith, an athlete Hunt deeply admires. Asher-Smith’s victory in that event made her the joint-most successful athlete in European Championships history, with a total of seven gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Hunt expressed the profound experience of making history with Asher-Smith, stating, ‘Creating history together as two young women on a global stage is incredible. Who gets to do that?’

Hunt detailed her long-standing admiration for Asher-Smith, not only for her athletic prowess but also for her ability to balance a high-profile career with academic pursuits. ‘Dina is someone who I’ve looked up to my whole career. Not just the way she’s amazingly quick and a world champion, but the way she handles herself and she was one of the first women to do a very academic degree and chase that life off the track and still be fabulous on the track. She’s a role model.’ Hunt felt honored to contribute to Asher-Smith’s historic achievement.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Now finding herself in a position to be a role model, Hunt finds the idea ‘crazy’ but acknowledges the influence she can have. She credits her own career progression to the support and inspiration from numerous successful female athletes. ‘It’s crazy to me. I’ve been helped along my way by so many successful and amazing and gorgeous and fast women so to be in the same conversations is amazing,’ she said.

Hunt aims to convey a message of limitless potential to aspiring athletes. She believes that individuals can be both strong and compassionate, excel academically and athletically, and achieve a fulfilling balance between personal and professional lives. ‘You can be soft and be strong, you can be great on the track and in the classroom, be a mother and have a successful career, have everything you’ve ever dreamed of,’ Hunt stated. Her core message is one of empowerment: ‘There’s no world where you need to put limits on yourself. Anything you set your mind to you can achieve.’
