London’s homicide rate is significantly lower than that of every U.S. state, according to recent data, a point highlighted by Mayor Sadiq Khan in response to ongoing criticism. The Mayor emphasized that murder rates in the capital are at record lows, attributing this success to the city’s comprehensive approach to tackling crime and its underlying causes. This strategy, he contends, is effectively reducing violence across London.

London’s Declining Homicide Figures

Official statistics reveal a notable decrease in homicides in London. In 2025, the city recorded 97 homicides, marking a 36 percent reduction from the 153 homicides in 2019. This figure was also 11 percent lower than the 109 homicides recorded in 2024. The Metropolitan Police reported that the 2025 total represented the lowest number of killings in eleven years, with 95 homicides occurring in 2014.

The homicide rate in London for 2025 stood at 1.1 per 100,000 people. This places the capital in a more favorable position compared to several major global cities, including New York (2.8 per 100,000), Paris (1.6), Toronto (1.6), Berlin (3.2), Los Angeles (5.6), Chicago (11.7), and Philadelphia (12.3).

Stop and Search Tactics and Effectiveness

In parallel with the declining homicide rates, recent figures from the Metropolitan Police indicate an increase in the use of stop and search powers. Over the past year, the force conducted nearly 20 percent more stop and searches. Notably, July saw the highest recorded find rate in the force’s history, with over a third of searches resulting in the discovery of weapons, drugs, or other evidence of criminal activity.

These enhanced stop and search operations led to the seizure of at least 3,800 weapons and the discovery of illegal drugs on more than 27,800 occasions in 2025. Scotland Yard attributes this improved effectiveness to officers making more “precise and considered stops.”

Assistant Commissioner’s Statement on Stop and Search

Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who leads the Metropolitan Police’s stop and search initiatives, described the tactic as a vital tool. He stated, “Stop and search remains a vital tool in helping officers remove weapons from our streets, apprehend dangerous offenders and ultimately save lives. But it is also a tactic that must be used fairly, professionally and with the confidence of the communities we serve.”

Concerns Regarding Disproportionality in Policing

Despite the reported successes in crime reduction and the effectiveness of stop and search, concerns persist regarding the disproportionality of its application. Research published earlier in the year indicated that Black individuals in London are significantly more likely to be stopped and searched than white individuals. Analysis of approximately 152,000 stop and search records from 2023 by researchers at King’s College London revealed that the grounds for searches were often more vaguely documented for Black individuals.

The study identified specific areas within London with particularly high rates of disproportionality. East Sheen in Richmond saw Black individuals being 48 times more likely to be searched than white individuals. Dulwich Village followed with a rate 40 times higher, and Hampstead Town with 38 times higher.

Overall, in February, Black Londoners were 3.4 times more likely than white Londoners to be stopped and searched. This national rate stands at four times. These figures highlight an ongoing challenge in ensuring equitable application of policing tactics across all communities.

Context of Political Commentary

Mayor Khan’s recent remarks follow a history of critical commentary from figures such as Donald Trump, who has previously characterized London’s crime situation negatively and questioned the Mayor’s leadership. Khan’s assertion about London’s homicide rate being lower than all U.S. states directly contrasts with such criticisms, framing the city’s crime-fighting strategies as effective and evidence-based.

A source close to the Mayor suggested that negative portrayals of London are politically motivated, stating, “Trump and Farage want to paint London as a hellhole because it suits their interest. But all the evidence shows they’re wrong. They hate us because London is diverse, multicultural, and continues to be a huge success.” This perspective frames the debate as one influenced by political agendas rather than solely by objective crime statistics.

Conclusion: A Data-Driven Perspective on London’s Safety

The available data presents a complex picture of safety in London. While homicide rates have fallen to historic lows and compare favorably to major global cities, including all U.S. states, the increased use of stop and search raises questions about fairness and disproportionality. The Metropolitan Police maintain that their approach is effective and evolving, aiming to balance crime prevention with community trust. The ongoing dialogue underscores the importance of data in understanding and addressing urban safety challenges.
