Athlete’s Testimony on Alleged Assaults and Text Messages
During his testimony, the athlete recounted an incident where Alan Jones allegedly kissed him without consent at a sporting event. Following this, text messages were presented in court, indicating a pattern of intimate communication. One message attributed to Jones read, “You looked great. I love you. He also expressed discomfort with a message from Jones suggesting he hoped the athlete could feel his kisses “all over.” To create distance and reinforce the platonic nature of their relationship, the athlete explained that he consistently addressed Jones as “mate” in his replies. “Mate was my way of pushing him back I guess,” he told the court.

The athlete also conveyed his apprehension about offending or upsetting Alan Jones, citing the broadcaster’s significant influence and reputation for damaging individuals and entities. “I was always concerned about the reputation he had and how he could destroy people,” the athlete testified. He elaborated that Jones had the power to harm “brands” and “politicians,” which contributed to his cautious approach in their interactions.
The court was informed that Jones frequently sent messages expressing love and kisses to the athlete. When the sportsman sent a photograph, Jones allegedly replied, “I love this photo. I love you. I want to kiss you for hours.” The athlete’s response at the time was, “Not at all mate, it’s nice to be loved,” a sentiment he later clarified in court as not reflecting romantic feelings.
Legal Proceedings and Defense Claims
Alan Jones, 85, is charged with one count each of indecent assault and sexual touching without consent concerning this athlete, alongside 20 other charges involving five other complainants. He denies all allegations. During the opening statements, Jones’s barrister suggested that the case against her client was driven by motives such as rivalry, treachery, financial gain, and opportunism.
