A gunman crashed a truck into Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, before opening fire inside the building. Michigan State Police confirm they are responding to an active shooter situation at the Reform Jewish place of worship.
Incident Details
Smoke billows from windows and a roof vent at the synagogue, where a large contingent of law enforcement has converged. Numerous police vehicles from nearby departments, along with SWAT teams and a bomb squad, surround the scene.
The synagogue, one of the largest congregations in the country, operates a preschool and remains open during the incident.
Witness Accounts
Witness Lisa described her terror, stating, “I’m scared to death for my friends. I’ve never seen anything like this. My first thought was the children.”
She added, “Parents and grandparents are coming, and they’re scared to death for their children. This is senseless; this is not okay.” Adults gathered in front of a police line, embracing in tears amid the chaos.
Official Responses
Michigan State Police issued a statement: “The Michigan State Police is aware of an active shooting incident that is ongoing in West Bloomfield. We are asking community members to stay away from the area to allow for police response. Troopers are also increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district.”
The West Bloomfield School District noted: “We have been alerted by the West Bloomfield Police Department of a police situation in the community.”
The Jewish Federation of Detroit confirmed: “We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel. Law enforcement are responding. Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown. We ask community members to stay away from the area at this time.”
