ADX Energy is significantly broadening its exploration efforts in the gas-rich Sicily Channel, having submitted a third application for offshore exploration acreage in Italy. This strategic move comes as Europe faces a renewed energy supply challenge, prompting a focus on domestic gas resources. The company’s latest application targets a substantial 517 square kilometre area off the western coast of Sicily. This follows two prior applications in the same region, lodged in mid-August, bringing ADX’s total pursuit of new exploration grounds to 1303 square kilometres.

These three new application areas are strategically situated adjacent to ADX’s existing exploration permit, C.R. 150.AU, which the company wholly owns and covers 346 square kilometres. If all three new applications are successful, ADX would command a dominant and contiguous exploration position of approximately 1650 square kilometres in this promising region.

The company’s intensified focus on Sicily is underscored by the current volatility in European gas markets. Benchmark Dutch TTF gas futures have recently surged past €70 per megawatt-hour (equivalent to A$113), highlighting the vulnerability of gas-dependent economies like Italy to significant price fluctuations. ADX’s confidence in the Sicilian prospectivity is further bolstered by an independent assessment from RISC Advisory. This review validated the Terravecchia Formation, dating back to the Miocene epoch, as a viable source of biogenic gas.

Geological Evidence Supports Sicily Gas Potential

The geological interpretation of the Terravecchia Formation as a gas play is supported by several key factors. Regional geological data aligns with this assessment, and encouraging gas shows have been detected in nearby wells. Furthermore, analogous discoveries have been made in the vicinity, including the onshore Lippone-Mazara fields and the significant offshore Argo-Cassiopea gas fields.

ADX’s existing permit, C.R. 150.AU, already holds considerable potential. An unrisked mean prospective resource estimate indicates 619 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas, with a best estimate reaching an impressive 1.265 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). Historical exploration activities by major energy companies like ENI and Shell within this permit area have previously confirmed the presence of gas. Notably, the Nilde-2 well encountered high-quality natural gas in shallower geological layers. Additionally, surrounding offset wells have frequently recorded elevated mud gas shows within the target sandstone formations, providing further evidence of the area’s gas-bearing nature.

A critical strategic advantage for the existing permit area is its proximity to the Transmed gas pipeline corridor. Located just 20 kilometres to the north, this pipeline system transports gas from North Africa into Sicily, offering a potentially direct and efficient route to market for any commercially viable discoveries made by ADX.

Navigating the Application Process and Regulatory Landscape

The application process for the new acreage involves a three-month period during which other energy companies can submit competing bids. Should no competing applications be filed, ADX will proceed by obtaining endorsements from two Italian ministry bodies and submitting a request for an environmental impact assessment to advance its claim. In the event of competing bids, the relevant ministry will evaluate submissions based on criteria such as the originality of exploration objectives, the proposed work program, and the technical and economic capabilities of each applicant.

ADX’s strategic expansion in Italy is occurring within a supportive regulatory environment. The Italian government, under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is actively encouraging domestic gas exploration to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on imports. This policy has led to the fast-tracking of gas-only exploration applications, creating a favourable regulatory climate for companies like ADX. While prioritizing gas exploration, the government has simultaneously tightened regulations for oil exploration, aligning with ADX’s gas-centric strategy in the region.

Diversified Operations in Austria Provide Cash Flow

While ADX builds its presence in Italy, the company maintains robust operations in Austria. Its established onshore fields, Anshof and Vienna Basin, are currently producing oil and generating consistent cash flow. These operations provide a stable financial foundation for the company’s broader exploration initiatives.

In a recent development from Austria, ADX reported the results of a commingled flow test at its HOCH-1 well in Upper Austria. The test, which encompassed four zones, yielded an average gas flow rate of 3.15 million cubic feet per day, equating to 548 barrels of oil equivalent per day. This result builds upon an earlier test of a single zone that produced at a rate of 2.7 million cubic feet per day.

The HOCH-1 well is the first of three shallow gas prospects planned by ADX in Upper Austria. The GOLD-1 and SCHOE-1 prospects have already received full permitting and are slated for future drilling. Beyond these shallow gas targets, ADX also holds the significant Welchau deep gas prospect in Austria. Furthermore, readily accessible gas pipeline infrastructure is located just two kilometres from the shallow prospects, ensuring a straightforward route to market for any production.

A Dual Strategy for European Energy Security

With substantial potential resources identified in Sicily and a multi-faceted, cash-generating operation in Austria, ADX Energy appears to be executing a well-defined, two-pronged strategy. This approach aims to position the company as a key domestic energy supplier for a continent actively seeking to secure its energy future. As ADX systematically advances its exploration and production activities on both fronts, its role in the evolving European energy landscape is poised for growth.
