AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon has announced that the league will initiate its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding an incident involving Sydney Swans players at a team hotel, but only after the current police investigation concludes. The league’s stance comes after five Swans players were suspended for the remainder of the AFL season due to alleged breaches of club standards, including staying out late, consuming alcohol, and having women in their hotel rooms.

AFL’s Stance on the Sydney Swans Incident

The five players involved – Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, and James Jordon – have been stood down by the Sydney Swans club. The club determined their actions violated its code of conduct. While the players have maintained their innocence and no charges have been filed, the AFL has stated it will not commence its independent inquiry while law enforcement is actively investigating. Dillon emphasized the importance of not interfering with the police investigation, calling it a “really important and really serious matter.”

Player Eligibility and Brownlow Medal

Despite their suspension by the club, the affected Sydney Swans players will remain eligible for the prestigious Brownlow Medal, awarded annually to the league’s best and fairest player. However, Dillon confirmed that these players will not receive an invitation to attend the AFL’s premier awards ceremony. This decision highlights the league’s attempt to balance the ongoing investigation and potential disciplinary actions with established player entitlements.

Addressing Allegations and Player Conduct

When questioned about allegations of drug presence in the hotel room and the necessity for player drug testing, Dillon reiterated that the police investigation is ongoing. He noted that the scope of such investigations, particularly concerning historical drug use like hair sample analysis, can extend back several months. The AFL’s approach underscores a commitment to allowing the official police inquiry to run its course without preemptive league action.

A Message of Respect and Safety

Andrew Dillon also conveyed a direct message to women and all AFL supporters who may be concerned by the scandal. He firmly stated that “the AFL stands for respect for women and it is not negotiable.” Dillon acknowledged the public’s right to ask questions during this period and stressed that the AFL aims to foster an environment where “everyone should feel safe and included.” He sought to reassure the wider community that the actions of a few individuals do not represent the values or conduct of the entire AFL industry. This sentiment was echoed when discussing the broader implications of the incident, reinforcing the league’s dedication to upholding its principles of respect and inclusivity across all levels of the sport.

Future Steps and League Accountability

The AFL’s decision to await the conclusion of the police investigation before launching its own internal review signifies a methodical approach to handling the sensitive situation. This ensures that any subsequent actions taken by the league will be informed by the findings of the official inquiry. The AFL’s commitment to a thorough investigation, coupled with its clear stance on respect for women, aims to address the concerns raised by the incident and reinforce the standards expected of all participants in the Australian Football League.

The situation involving the Sydney Swans players remains a developing story, with the AFL poised to take further action once the police investigation provides clarity. The league’s leadership has emphasized its dedication to transparency and accountability throughout this process, striving to maintain the integrity of the sport and the trust of its fans and the broader community.

Dillon’s comments serve as a clear indication of the AFL’s priorities: upholding the law, respecting the investigative process, and reinforcing the non-negotiable values of respect and safety within the sport. The outcome of both the police and the subsequent AFL investigations will be closely watched, potentially setting precedents for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
