The Australian Football League (AFL) advances toward a multi-million dollar extension with the Northern Territory, aiming to host games in the region beyond 2026. This agreement could shift team participation while maintaining three annual fixtures.
Current Northern Territory Fixtures
Each season features three AFL matches in the Northern Territory: two in Darwin and one in Alice Springs. The Gold Coast Suns currently play two games, while the Melbourne Demons participate in one.
Team Adjustments and Requests
The Suns seek to cut their games to one per season, citing their strong performance there. Their push for an immediate reduction this year faced rejection from state authorities, who demand fulfillment of existing terms.
Melbourne shows interest in expanding from one to two games. This swap would preserve the total of three matches annually.
Potential AFLW Inclusion
Negotiations explore adding an AFLW fixture, with Richmond versus Essendon Dreamtime emerging as a candidate matchup. Each AFL game in the territory generates about $1 million.
2026 Schedule
Next year’s lineup includes the Suns facing St Kilda on May 9 in Darwin, followed by Port Adelaide on May 15 in Darwin. The Demons then host GWS Giants on May 31 in Alice Springs.
Performance History
The Suns hold a 6-2 record in the Northern Territory, including 2-0 last season with wins over the Western Bulldogs (106-96) and Hawthorn (104-96). Melbourne’s record stands at 8-11, marked by a recent 91-63 loss to St Kilda.
