Mikel Arteta expressed strong interest in Pio Esposito following the young striker’s impactful substitute appearance during Arsenal’s Champions League encounter with Inter Milan in January.
Champions League Clash Sparks Interest
Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat at the San Siro, but Esposito’s performance stood out. The 20-year-old replaced Lautaro Martinez in the 63rd minute and immediately challenged defender Cristhian Mosquera, prompting Arteta to introduce Gabriel Magalhaes to counter the threat.
Post-match, Arteta directed sporting director Andrea Berta to contact Inter’s Piero Ausilio for details on availability and potential transfer costs. Inter firmly rejected the approach, stating Esposito forms a key part of their future plans and is not available at any price.
Despite the rebuff, Esposito remains a focal point for Arsenal, who lead the Premier League and seek to bolster their attack beyond Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish forward, signed for £64 million last summer, has netted 15 goals in 37 appearances.
Esposito’s Rapid Rise at Inter
Standing at 6 ft 3 in, Esposito joined Inter’s academy in 2014. A loan spell at Serie B side Spezia last season saw him score 17 league goals, nearly securing promotion for the club. This form led to his recall to Inter’s first team, where he has scored seven goals across all competitions this season.
Secured until 2030 on a €1 million annual salary (£800,000), Esposito aims to establish himself at Inter, particularly with Martinez sidelined by injury. Inter coach Cristian Chivu, who previously led the club’s Primavera side, praises the forward’s determination.
“It’s the merit of a boy who wants to prove himself,” Chivu stated. “He wants to put himself on the line and take responsibility like everyone else: if things don’t go well, it’s my fault. But I like that they follow me and want to make this season what we all hope it can be.”
Chivu added a personal note: “He was a small kid, tall. He barely reached my chest. We’ve practically grown up together. I know his family, his background, his journey through the youth system. He was an underage captain in my Inter Primavera team. I’m happy for him, just as I am for the rest of the team.”
