The scene sees actors Barry Keoghan, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, and Harris Dickinson stepping into the roles of Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and John Lennon, respectively.
Recreating an Unforgettable Moment
In the recreated shot, Harris Dickinson, portraying John Lennon, leads the group, dressed in a distinctive white suit and shirt. He is closely followed by Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. This visual echo of one of music history’s most recognizable album covers marks a significant moment in the production of Mendes’ highly anticipated film project.
The original Abbey Road cover photograph was taken by Iain Macmillan, a close friend of John Lennon. Macmillan, a Scottish photographer, famously balanced on a ladder in the middle of the road to capture the image. He had a mere ten minutes to get the shot, instructing the band members to walk back and forth across the zebra crossing repeatedly. Ultimately, Paul McCartney selected the final image from the series, discarding the rest.
Filming at the Iconic Location
Reports initially suggested that Westminster Council might block filming at the actual Abbey Road location. However, it was later confirmed that the council was working closely with the production team to facilitate the shoot at the historic site. This collaboration allowed for an authentic recreation of the album cover, adding a layer of realism to the biopic.
The Abbey Road album, released in 1969, was the penultimate studio album by The Beatles. While Let It Be was their final album, much of its material had been recorded prior to the sessions for Abbey Road. The album is renowned for its innovative production and enduring songs, cementing its place in music history.
Beyond the Album Cover: A Deeper Look
The set also featured a replica of John Lennon’s famously psychedelic Rolls-Royce Phantom V. This car holds significant historical value in the Beatles’ narrative. Originally black, Lennon had it famously repainted in a vibrant yellow, adorned with elaborate Romany-inspired decorative motifs in red, blue, green, and gold in 1967.
Also present on set was actor Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, portraying Mal Evans. Evans was a pivotal figure in the Beatles’ journey, serving as their main roadie and formerly a bouncer at the Cavern Club. Hired by Brian Epstein, Evans became an indispensable member of the band’s entourage, accompanying them on tours and attending nearly all of their recording sessions.
The Ambitious Four-Film Project
Titled The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event, this ambitious project was announced last year. It aims to tell the story of The Beatles through four distinct feature films, with each movie offering a perspective from one of the band members. The narrative will trace their evolution from their early days in Liverpool in the 1960s to their global superstardom and eventual breakup in 1970.
This marks the first time that surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison, have granted rights for feature films about them. Sam Mendes has described the project as the first ‘bingeable theatrical experience’.
The ensemble cast is extensive, including:

- Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s partner.
- James Norton as Brian Epstein, the band’s manager.

- Harry Lloyd as George Martin, the band’s influential producer, often called the ‘fifth Beatle’.
Each of the four films in this anthology is scheduled for simultaneous release in 2028, promising a comprehensive and immersive exploration of the most influential band in music history.
