The project, spearheaded by Shankly’s eldest granddaughter, Karen Gill, aims to reconstruct his childhood home and establish a visitor centre, breathing new life into the landscape where the iconic football figure spent his formative years.
Reviving Glenbuck: A Community Endeavour
Glenbuck, once a thriving coal mining settlement, has largely disappeared, with only the foundations of its former houses remaining. Among these are the remnants of the two-room dwelling where Bill Shankly grew up with his nine siblings. Despite the village’s physical decline, its historical significance and the surrounding natural beauty continue to hold appeal. A memorial stone dedicated to Shankly, situated on the hill, remains a poignant spot for Liverpool fans, who often leave scarves and mementes, symbolizing his profound impact on the club and football history.
The regeneration project is being managed by a not-for-profit social enterprise company, Shankly Glenbuck Village Community Interest Company. The initiative has already secured some funding from the Scottish Government, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and East Ayrshire Council, which have supported the creation of a basic industrial heritage site with informational displays detailing Glenbuck’s past as a mining hub and a remarkable source of football talent.
The Glenbuck Cherrypickers and a Footballing Legacy
Glenbuck was renowned not only for its mining industry but also as a breeding ground for footballers. The local team, the Glenbuck Cherrypickers, coached by Shankly’s father, produced numerous players who went on to represent prominent English and Scottish clubs. The very pitch where the Cherrypickers played is still visible today, a tangible link to the village’s sporting heritage. Notable players from the village included members of the Shankly family, alongside figures like Sandy Brown and Sandy Tait, who were part of the 1901 FA Cup-winning side.
Bill Shankly himself began his football journey in Glenbuck before moving to Carlisle United and later enjoying a successful playing career at Preston North End. His transition to management ultimately led him to Liverpool in 1959, where he is credited with rebuilding the club and leading them to three league titles.

“We want to complete the circle and help others to discover this beautiful place,” Ms. Gill remarked. Shankly himself reflected on this, recalling, “We had our pride and our characters, who made their own world, the best of a bad lot, the best of isolation.” He remembered the village as a place where people supported each other, shared stories, and found joy amidst hardship.

To advance the regeneration plans, a crowdfunding initiative has been launched. The Shankly Glenbuck Village Community Interest Company is seeking to raise an initial £250,000 to fund essential steps such as feasibility studies, architectural planning, and the recruitment of a project manager. The ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable heritage destination that celebrates Glenbuck’s unique history and its most famous son.
