The Boston Bruins organization is mourning the tragic passing of Alex Gimenez, their Director of Hockey Operations, who died just two months after joining the NHL team in what he described as his “dream job.” The team announced the news on Friday, expressing profound sadness over the loss of a respected colleague.

Remembering Alex Gimenez

Alex Gimenez joined the Boston Bruins in July 2023, taking on the role of Director of Hockey Operations, focusing on Collective Bargaining Agreement matters. His tenure, though brief, left a significant impact on the organization. General Manager Don Sweeney shared a statement reflecting on Gimenez’s contributions and character.

A Statement from the Bruins General Manager

“The Boston Bruins are deeply saddened to share the passing of our colleague Alex Gimenez,” said Don Sweeney. “Alex joined our team in July as Director of Hockey Operations, Collective Bargaining Agreement. Although Alex’s time with the Bruins was far too brief, his intelligence, thoughtfulness and character were evident from the moment he joined us. Alex earned the respect of all who knew and worked with him throughout his career and, most importantly, he was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Alex’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Details regarding the cause of Gimenez’s death and his specific age at the time of his passing have not been publicly disclosed.

A Decade with the Boston Red Sox

Before his role with the Bruins, Gimenez dedicated over a decade to the Boston Red Sox, a period during which he became an integral part of the baseball operations department. The MLB team also released a statement expressing their heartbreak over the news.

Tribute from the Red Sox

“Alex was an integral member of our baseball operations for over a decade, and forever a part of our Red Sox family,” the Red Sox stated on social media. “We are absolutely heartbroken by this news and send our love to Alex’s family.” During his extensive time with the Red Sox, Gimenez held various positions, including Manager of Major League Operations, demonstrating a deep commitment and broad experience within the organization.

Early Career and Education

Gimenez’s career in professional sports began prior to his long stint with the Red Sox. He gained initial experience through internships with Major League Baseball and the then-Cleveland Indians. His professional journey also included a role as a manager for the newly formed Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

Academically, Gimenez was a graduate of Cornell University, completing his studies in 2015. His educational background provided a strong foundation for his subsequent career in sports management and operations.

Fulfilling a “Dream Job”

Upon joining the Boston Bruins, Gimenez shared his excitement and gratitude on LinkedIn, highlighting the significance of the opportunity. He expressed his deep appreciation for joining his favorite NHL team in a meaningful capacity.

“I am incredibly humbled for this opportunity to not only get to work for my favorite NHL team, but to do so in a meaningful role with an amazing group of people at a really exciting time for the organization,” Gimenez wrote. He further elaborated on the rarity and personal fulfillment of such a position: “Very few people are fortunate enough to get opportunities like this to land their dream job, and I am beyond grateful to get to live mine.”

A Legacy of Respect and Character

Throughout his career, Alex Gimenez garnered widespread respect from colleagues and peers across different sports organizations. His intelligence, thoughtful approach, and strong character were consistently noted by those who worked with him. The outpouring of tributes from both the Bruins and the Red Sox underscores the significant impact he had in a relatively short period within the sports industry.

The loss of Alex Gimenez is deeply felt by the Boston Bruins and the broader sports community. His dedication, professionalism, and personal qualities have left a lasting impression, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The organization extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time.
