Newly released bodycam footage captures the moments after Jamie Lee Komoroski, who was later sentenced for the death of a bride, expressed distress and confusion following a fatal collision. The video shows Komoroski, then 25, reacting to the aftermath of crashing her vehicle into a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson on their wedding night in April 2023.
Fatal Collision on Folly Island
The incident occurred on Folly Island, South Carolina, when Komoroski’s car collided with a golf cart occupied by the newly married couple and two family members. The crash tragically resulted in the death of Samantha Miller, 34, who was still in her wedding dress, and serious injuries to her husband, Aric Hutchinson, 36. Komoroski, who admitted to driving under the influence, is currently serving a 25-year sentence for reckless homicide.
Arrest Footage Reveals Komoroski’s State
The recently surfaced bodycam footage offers a glimpse into Komoroski’s demeanor immediately after the crash. Initially, she appeared concerned for the bride, calling out to first responders, “Is she okay? Make sure she’s okay.” Dressed in a bralette and overshirt, her cries could be heard as she pointed toward the wreckage.
Approximately 30 minutes after the collision, the video shows an officer questioning Komoroski about her alcohol consumption. Her speech was slurred as she initially denied drinking, then stated she had consumed only two drinks: a beer and an unspecified alcoholic beverage. When pressed, she clarified the second drink was a “tequila pineapple.”
When asked to rate her level of intoxication on a scale of one to ten, Komoroski responded, “I would like a lawyer, honestly.” The footage continues to show her repeatedly questioning why she was being handcuffed, despite officers informing her she was being detained on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
Refusal of Breathalyzer and Plea to Call Father
Later, at the police station, Komoroski refused to take a breathalyzer test. The video shows her persistently asking to contact her father, stating, “I would like the right to call my father right now… Can I please call him? I just want to get it over with and go home… can I just call?”
Blood alcohol tests later revealed Komoroski’s blood alcohol content to be 0.261 percent, significantly exceeding South Carolina’s legal limit of 0.08 percent. She also reportedly drove at speeds of 65 mph at the time of the crash.
Sentencing and Remorse
In April 2024, over a year after the fatal incident, Komoroski was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to reckless homicide. During her sentencing hearing, she expressed remorse for her actions, stating, “On the night of April 22, 2023, I chose to drink and drive which resulted in the death of Samantha Miller. This is the worst decision I have ever made in my life. Due to my poor decisions a beautiful wife, sister and mother was taken… all I can say is how incredibly remorseful I am.”
Victim’s Husband Recounts Tragedy
Aric Hutchinson, who suffered severe injuries including broken legs and a traumatic brain injury, shared the devastating impact of the crash. He recounted his wife Samantha’s final moments, stating, “She said she didn’t want the night to end, I kissed her on the head, the next thing I knew I woke up in hospital.” He expressed profound grief, adding, “I wish I had died that night. I wish I had seen it coming. I’d have jumped off the golf cart so that you’d only have run me over. We did not get hit, we got ran through at 65mph.”
Background of the Fatal Night
Evidence presented indicated that Komoroski had been engaged in a bar-hopping spree prior to the crash. Surveillance footage showed the golf cart carrying the newlyweds and their guests moving slowly from their reception venue, followed shortly by Komoroski’s speeding vehicle. The force of the impact caused the golf cart to roll multiple times and be thrown a considerable distance.
Komoroski was initially held without bond before being released on a $150,000 bond in March 2024, prior to her sentencing. The newly released footage provides further context to the events of that tragic night and the immediate aftermath for the driver responsible.
