Ballot Counting Slowdown Casts Doubt on California Election Results

The extensive process of tallying mail-in ballots in California is extending election outcomes, leaving the fates of prominent figures uncertain. In the race for Los Angeles Mayor, with an estimated 64 percent of votes counted since Election Day, the landscape remains dynamic.

Pratt Faces Runoff Uncertainty

Reality television personality Spencer Pratt, who is seeking to unseat incumbent Democratic Mayor Karen Bass, currently holds the second position. While Mayor Bass is projected to advance to a November runoff, the remaining uncounted ballots cast doubt on whether Pratt or progressive LA City Council member Nithya Raman will be her opponent. Recent tallies suggest Raman holds a slight edge over Pratt among the approximately 60,000 ballots processed this week. Given that mail-in voters often lean more Democratic, Pratt’s current seven-point lead could be further challenged.

It is important to note that, under California’s jungle primary system, mayoral candidates are not formally listed with political party affiliations on the ballot.

Hilton’s Gubernatorial Ambitions Remain in Flux

Meanwhile, in the race for Governor, former Fox News personality Steve Hilton maintains a lead, with an estimated 60 percent of the vote tallied. Hilton is currently ahead of former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and billionaire Tom Steyer. However, a substantial number of outstanding mail-in ballots means his position in the runoff is not yet definitively secured.

Hilton, originally from London, holds a narrow advantage over Becerra, who is approximately six points ahead of Steyer. The significant Democratic electorate in California, coupled with a tendency for more left-leaning voters to cast their ballots by mail and to do so later in the election cycle, suggests the gubernatorial contest could remain competitive.

California law permits mail-in ballots to be counted if they were postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The state has a history of requiring several days to complete its vote tabulation.

Reactions to the Extended Count

The extended vote-counting process has drawn commentary from various political figures. President Donald Trump, who has previously expressed concerns about mail-in voting, posted on the social media platform Truth Social, criticizing the pace of vote tabulation in California and suggesting it could lead to rigged outcomes. He has advocated for legislation, such as the Save America Act, to restrict mail-in voting and enhance voter identification requirements.

Steve Hilton has voiced frustration with the slow count, reportedly describing the process as a “global laughing stock” and contrasting it with the speed of ballot counting in other nations. He expressed confidence in his campaign’s ability to secure a spot in the top two runoff positions.

Spencer Pratt reacted to the ongoing count with a post stating, “God always wins.” His wife, Heidi Montag, shared a message of perseverance, though its direct connection to the election remains unclear. Montag’s social media activity has largely focused on her music and has included cryptic posts.
