Camborne Secures Historic Promotion
Camborne clinched the National Two West title with a crucial bonus point in a 41-34 defeat to second-placed Luctonians. This victory propels the Cherry & Whites to their highest level ever next season, marking Cornwall’s first team at National One in years.
Pre-Match Setback and Strong Start
Camborne faced an early challenge when debutant hooker Tom Channon suffered a warm-up injury, prompting a front-row reshuffle for Jordan Nicholls. The team delivered a passionate display, highlighted by Nicholls and man-of-the-match No. 8 Herbie Stupple.
Kyle Moyle opened the scoring with a penalty for the visitors. Luctonians responded aggressively, surging to a 17-3 lead by the first quarter’s end.
First Half Drama
In the 24th minute, Camborne’s pack powered over from a lineout maul 15 meters out, with Shaun Buzza touching down. Moyle converted to narrow the gap.
Luctonians extended their lead, but Josh Matavesi’s clever show-and-go created space for left wing Alex Ducker to score in the corner, making it 15-22 at one point. Buzza barged over again near halftime, and Moyle’s conversion set the score at 27-22.
Second Half and Title-Clinching Try
The second period started cautiously, with Camborne needing just one try for promotion. Luctonians scored first, but on 59 minutes, fly-half Rory O’Kane and lock Jamie Prisk combined with sharp handling to feed Matavesi, who sent lock Adam Hughes over for the historic score. Moyle’s conversion reduced the deficit to 34-29.
Luctonians secured their playoff spot with a converted try. Camborne pressed late, ending on the home goal line where Buzza powered over for a well-deserved hat-trick.
Season Achievements and Next Steps
Camborne celebrates a remarkable campaign with three promotions across adult teams. They receive the National Two West trophy at their final league match on Trevithick Day against Chester (3pm kick-off).
