Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has stated that he only considers criticism from Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson to be truly authoritative. The seasoned Italian coach, aged 67, has faced considerable scrutiny throughout Brazil’s World Cup campaign, despite a highly decorated 31-year managerial career that includes titles in all of Europe’s top five leagues and five Champions League triumphs.

Ancelotti Addresses Criticism

The five-time World Cup champions navigated the group stage by topping Group C on goal difference, following an opening 1-1 draw with Morocco and subsequent victories over Haiti and Scotland. Their progression to the knockout stages saw a narrow 2-1 victory over Japan, secured by a 96th-minute winner from Gabriel Martinelli after falling behind.

Despite Ancelotti’s extensive track record, a segment of Brazil’s demanding fanbase remains unconvinced by the team’s performances. Ahead of a crucial quarter-final qualification match against Norway, Ancelotti addressed these critiques.

Experience as a Shield

“In Italy, they say that all men want to be coaches and all women architects,” Ancelotti remarked, reflecting on the nature of public judgment in football. “I don’t know if I understand football or not, but no one can judge me on this.”

He emphasized his vast experience, noting, “The only thing that’s certain is that I’ve prepared for over 1,400 matches. That may not be enough to understand football, but it’s certainly a good amount of experience.”

Ancelotti then drew a direct comparison to Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager renowned for his longevity and success. “Only one person has prepared more matches than me: Alex Ferguson, who has prepared for over 2,000,” he stated. “I take advice from everyone but the only one who could really be the right person to give me advice is Alex Ferguson.”

Concluding his defense, Ancelotti asserted his self-awareness: “I am 100 per cent sure I am not a genius, but at the same time, I am 100 per cent sure I am not a fool.”

Norway’s Perspective and Historical Context

The upcoming match against Norway brings a unique historical dynamic. Norway’s Kjetil Rekdal, who scored the winning goal in their last encounter with Brazil, highlighted the immense pressure on Ancelotti’s side. Brazil has never defeated Norway in their four previous meetings, a streak that includes a notable 2-1 loss in the 1998 World Cup group stages.

Rekdal, who also serves as a coach, predicted a continued challenging fixture for Brazil. “2-1 to Norway. History repeats itself in football. It actually does quite often,” he commented. “Brazil definitely has the greatest pressure on them. That fear will always be there – the dread that they are going to slip up against Norway once again.”

Rekdal suggested that Norway’s current stars, such as Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard, do not need to rely on past results for motivation. “I don’t think Haaland and Martin Odegaard are thinking about Norway beating Brazil in 1998. They do not need the ghosts of the past to believe they are equal to the five-time world champions: their everyday reality at the absolute summit of European club football has already taught them that.”

Ancelotti’s Esteem for Ferguson

Ancelotti’s reference to Sir Alex Ferguson underscores a deep respect for a fellow managerial icon. Ferguson, who managed Manchester United for over 26 years, amassed an unparalleled trophy cabinet, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns. His tenure is widely regarded as one of the most successful in football history.

By singling out Ferguson, Ancelotti implicitly positions himself as someone who values the opinions of those who have reached the pinnacle of the sport and sustained success over decades. This perspective suggests that while Ancelotti acknowledges external commentary, his ultimate benchmark for self-assessment comes from a figure he clearly holds in high regard, someone whose own career provides a unique frame of reference for the pressures and demands of elite international management.

The Pressure on Brazil

The weight of expectation on Brazil at any World Cup is immense, amplified by their status as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history. Ancelotti, a manager accustomed to navigating high-pressure environments, is tasked with leading a squad filled with global stars. The team’s performances, even when resulting in wins, are subjected to intense scrutiny, a common theme for the Seleção.

The historical anomaly of never beating Norway adds another layer of psychological complexity to the upcoming match. While Ancelotti’s experience and Ferguson’s perceived endorsement offer a degree of personal reassurance, the ultimate test will be on the pitch, where Brazil aims to overcome both their opponents and the persistent external doubts.
