Chelsea is reportedly nearing a significant transfer for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, with negotiations progressing rapidly. As the club prepares for Lacroix’s potential arrival, they are also said to be in discussions with Crystal Palace regarding a season-long loan for Chelsea’s own defender, Axel Disasi. This move would see Disasi return to Palace, the club he helped win the FA Cup, Europa Conference League, and Community Shield during his tenure.

Chelsea’s Defensive Reinforcement Strategy

Chelsea has been actively strengthening its squad this summer, aiming to address a disappointing tenth-place finish in the Premier League last season. The club has already secured England midfielder Morgan Rogers in a British-record deal, along with right-back Marco Palestra and winger Geovany Quenda. However, a primary focus remains on bolstering the central defense, an area that conceded 52 goals during the previous top-flight campaign.

Maxence Lacroix: A Key Target

Maxence Lacroix, a French international, has been a consistent target for Chelsea over the past month. The club has intensified its interest, and negotiations are reportedly moving at a swift pace. Crystal Palace has set an asking price of £55 million for Lacroix, who has been a pivotal player for them. The defender recently returned from representing France in the North American World Cup campaign, where he made three appearances.

Axel Disasi’s Potential Return to Palace

In parallel to the Lacroix pursuit, Chelsea is exploring a loan deal for Axel Disasi with Crystal Palace. The French centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and has not featured for Chelsea since January 2025. Following his loan spell at Aston Villa in February 2025, Disasi spent the latter half of the last season on loan at West Ham United.

Disasi’s West Ham Loan Spell

Despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League, Disasi was considered one of the team’s standout performers. His contributions were highly valued, with former West Ham teammate El Hadji Malick Diouf describing him as a “machine” and expressing surprise that he hadn’t secured a regular starting role at Chelsea. Diouf highlighted Disasi’s experience in the Premier League and his defensive capabilities.

“The guy is not a small player!” Diouf stated. “He played for Chelsea, so he knows the league. It was crazy he stayed for such a long time and he didn’t play, but when he came here, he showed that he’s a machine! I’m really happy for him. He’s a good defender and I think he helped us a lot.”

Disasi’s Chelsea Career Overview

Axel Disasi joined Chelsea from Monaco in 2023 for a fee of £38.5 million. The imposing 6 ft 3 in defender has made a total of 61 appearances across all competitions for the Blues. He was part of the squad that won the Europa Conference League in 2025 and was a runner-up in the Carabao Cup final the previous season. Despite having three years remaining on his contract, Disasi is understood to be surplus to requirements for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.

Strategic Player Movements

The potential exchange of players between Chelsea and Crystal Palace underscores a strategic approach to squad management for both clubs. Chelsea aims to secure a high-profile defensive reinforcement in Lacroix while potentially offloading Disasi to a team where he can gain consistent playing time and add value. For Crystal Palace, the loan of Disasi would provide experienced cover at center-back, directly replacing Lacroix and mitigating the impact of his departure.

This period of transfer activity highlights the dynamic nature of the Premier League, with clubs constantly seeking to optimize their rosters to meet competitive demands and achieve their season objectives. The successful completion of these deals will depend on the final agreement between the clubs on transfer fees and loan terms.
