Investigators have released images of children’s clothing in an effort to identify further victims of a former childcare worker, Hamish Tait. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is appealing to the public for assistance, warning that the images may be distressing but could prove crucial in their ongoing investigation. The clothing items, including a dinosaur puffer jacket, patterned shorts, and two distinct T-shirts, were allegedly discovered on electronic devices seized from Tait.

Investigation into Hamish Tait

Hamish Tait, 35, faces a significant number of charges, totaling 329, related to the alleged creation and distribution of child abuse material. These alleged offenses are believed to have occurred between 2018 and 2023 across multiple childcare centers, primarily in Sydney’s north-west, including locations at Rouse Hill and Putney. Police suspect the unique clothing items may be recognized by parents, guardians, or other members of the public, potentially leading to the identification of additional victims.

Tait has been in custody since his arrest and charging in July 2025. At the time of his arrest, authorities seized approximately 2.5 million files from electronic devices at his residence. His initial charges, eight counts related to online child abuse material offenses, have since expanded significantly. Through April, June, and July of 2026, additional charges were laid, bringing the total to 329. These include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent.

Identifying Unidentified Victims

A key objective of releasing the clothing images is to identify 22 individuals who are among the alleged 158 victims in the case. Authorities acknowledge that some of these individuals may now be adults. Detective Acting Inspector Emmanuel Tsardoulias of the AFP emphasized the importance of any information, regardless of its perceived significance.

“We understand this week’s news about Operation Moonbi has been tough for members of our community,” Tsardoulias stated. “The abuse of trust we allege has occurred is confronting. Our investigation will continue, and we thank the public for their co-operation, patience and support as we continue to make inquiries.”

A non-publication order, initially imposed by the AFP to safeguard the investigation’s integrity, was lifted on Monday following legal proceedings. This lifting of the order has now permitted the public release of the clothing images and other details of the ongoing inquiry.

Childcare Provider’s Response

Several childcare centers identified as potential locations of abuse are operated by the provider Fit Kidz. In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Fit Kidz expressed profound distress and regret. “We are shocked, disgusted, saddened and sorry for the pain that has been caused,” the statement read. The provider affirmed that its primary focus remains on supporting those affected by the alleged incidents and on reinforcing child safety measures within its facilities.

Seeking Public Assistance

The AFP is urging anyone who may recognize the clothing items or have any information related to Hamish Tait’s alleged activities to come forward. The investigation, codenamed Operation Moonbi, aims to ensure all victims are identified and that justice is served. The release of these images represents a critical phase in this effort, relying on the community’s awareness and vigilance.
