Tottenham Hotspur’s significant summer restructuring appears to be accelerating, with star defender Cristian Romero reportedly nearing an exit from the club. The agent of the Argentina international, Ciro Palermo, has been observed in Milan, signaling a potential breakthrough in negotiations for a transfer to Inter Milan. The Italian giants are understood to be aggressively pursuing the centre-back, particularly following his impressive performances during the recent World Cup campaign.

Romero’s Potential Departure and Inter’s Pursuit

Spurs are anticipating a parting of ways with their captain in the near future, and Inter Milan is currently considered the frontrunner in securing his signature. Discussions between Inter and Romero’s representative have reportedly been ongoing. While Barcelona has also expressed interest in the player, his estimated valuation of £42.7 million may present a hurdle for the Catalan club, potentially placing them behind Inter in the race.

Romero’s departure would mark the first substantial, high-value sale since the departure of Daniel Levy. This aligns with the stated objectives of the Lewis family, who have pledged to redefine the club’s trajectory after two challenging seasons. Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation in the most recent campaign, a stark contrast to their 17th-place finish the previous year, a fact somewhat overshadowed by their Europa League success.

Club’s Recent Struggles and Ownership’s Commitment

Although Tottenham may not have faced an immediate threat of dropping into the Championship in the 2024/25 season, last season’s performance was a cause for considerable concern. It has been suggested that without the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi, the club could have found themselves competing in the second tier this term.

At the close of the last season, the Lewis family issued a statement addressing the club’s supporters and outlining their vision. The statement read:

“To the fans, as owners of 25 years, we have lived the highs and lows of Spurs with you. Finishing 17th this and last season does not reflect the stature or potential of this football club. We are bitterly disappointed and share your frustration. You, and we, expect more than this. We knew this must never happen again. Our approach to running the club is, and has been, to trust the experts to do that, while backing them to be successful. The problems we found were deeper than we realised and were allowed to build over the last few years. We know that has eroded trust and we have to win that back. As owners, we take ultimate responsibility for the situation in which the club finds itself. We also take responsibility for rebuilding Spurs. Our ambition is to recapture the spirit of the club and bring back the excitement, the fearlessness and the bold football we have always felt defined us. That means football comes first. The board and executive team have laid out their plans to meet this ambition. This will require investment – in our teams, the academy, our backroom functions and more – and we are fully committed to this. We are not selling the club. We are all in. We are investing in it. You will see more of this in the coming months. We care deeply about Spurs. The rebuild the club needs, and you deserve, has begun. The change required is deep. It will take time and commitment, but change is happening. We know that actions will speak louder than words. The Lewis Family.”

Investment and Squad Reinforcement

The Lewis family has, thus far, appeared to uphold their commitment to reinvestment and rebuilding the squad. Significant transfer activity has already taken place, including the reported £100 million acquisition of Sandro Tonali and an £85 million expenditure on Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. Additionally, a £52 million deal for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke has been completed. These substantial investments, coupled with the shrewd free transfer signings of experienced players Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, indicate a swift and determined effort to address the shortcomings experienced last season.

Future Outlook for Tottenham

The potential sale of Cristian Romero, if it materializes, would represent a significant financial transaction for Tottenham under the new ownership. However, it also signifies a broader strategy of reshaping the squad and potentially reinvesting funds into new talent. The club’s recent financial activity suggests a clear intention to back manager Roberto De Zerbi and strengthen the team across multiple positions. Supporters will be keenly watching to see how these strategic moves translate into on-field performance in the upcoming seasons, as the club aims to recapture its former glory and establish a more stable and successful future.
