Thousands of attendees at Washington D.C.’s National Mall were compelled to evacuate hours before President Donald Trump’s scheduled July 4th speech and a major fireworks display. The evacuations were necessitated by a combination of extreme heat and approaching thunderstorms, posing significant safety concerns for the America 250th anniversary festivities.

Extreme Heat Grips National Mall

Washington D.C. experienced sweltering conditions on Saturday, with the “real feel” temperature reaching 107 degrees Fahrenheit. Reports indicated that surfaces like chairs on the Mall registered temperatures as high as 160 degrees. This intense heat wave had already impacted earlier events, including a temporary closure of the America 250 celebrations on Friday due to the weather.

The extreme heat prompted organizers to implement several measures to protect attendees. Cooling stations, tents, and water distribution points were established across the National Mall. National Guard members were observed distributing water bottles to help guests combat the heat dome that had enveloped the East Coast. Despite the challenging conditions, President Trump expressed optimism about the crowd size, noting on Truth Social that the gatherings were “INCREDIBLE!”

Heat-Related Illnesses and Event Disruptions

The dangerous temperatures led to a significant number of heat-related illnesses. On Friday, the D.C. Fire and EMS Department reported that 44 individuals required treatment for heat-related issues at the National Mall event. Of those, 11 were transported to hospitals, with seven in more serious condition. The National Independence Day Parade, scheduled for Friday night, was also abruptly canceled due to the brutal heat.

The “Great American State Fair,” part of the America 250th anniversary celebrations, had its opening delayed from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday due to the extreme heat. Attendees had reportedly braved the blazing sun and waited in long lines for hours to gain entry.

Severe Weather Threatens July 4th Celebrations

Adding to the concerns about the heat, Washington D.C. was under an extreme heat warning until 9 p.m. on Saturday, and a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until 10 p.m. These warnings led authorities to order the evacuation of thousands of people from the National Mall and the Great American State Fair.

Attendees were advised to seek the nearest exits and await the clearing of the weather. Organizers at the Salute to America event near the Washington Monument recommended that guests take shelter in nearby Smithsonian buildings. The severe weather also caused similar evacuations in other cities, including Boston, where thousands were reportedly cleared from the city’s esplanade due to storms.

President Trump’s July 4th Plans

President Trump was scheduled to deliver a speech at 9:45 p.m. on July 4th, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. He had previously indicated that the speech would be “really long,” despite the challenging weather conditions. The fireworks spectacle, advertised as the world’s largest, was slated to begin at 10:30 p.m.

The President also commented on the condition of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall, stating it “looks great, despite all it went through with the Vandal Thugs.” He added that the pool would be “quickly drain[ed] and fix[ed] the damage done right after this big weekend.”

Broader Impact of the Heat Wave

The heat wave affecting D.C. was part of a larger pattern impacting the entire East Coast. In New Jersey, authorities reported at least 19 suspected heat-related deaths as of Saturday, many occurring in homes without air conditioning. New Jersey Health Commissioner Raynard E. Washington noted that the victims included younger adults and stressed the life-threatening nature of the heat wave, describing it as “not a typical summer heat wave.”

Philadelphia experienced its third consecutive day of 101-degree temperatures on Saturday, a record for the city. Further south, a 68-year-old man died from heat exhaustion-induced heart attack in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania. New York City also endured high temperatures, placing a strain on its electrical grid, with energy providers urging customers to conserve power.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has documented rising rates of heat-related illnesses across the Northeast. Forecasters anticipated some relief from the extreme temperatures later on Saturday night, with thunderstorms expected to move through the region.

Conclusion

The evacuations and disruptions on the National Mall underscored the severe impact of extreme weather on large public gatherings. While organizers aimed to celebrate a significant national milestone, safety concerns related to intense heat and threatening thunderstorms took precedence, forcing a temporary halt to festivities and highlighting the dangers of the ongoing heat wave across the East Coast.
