Esteemed actor Deborah Mailman is poised to make history as the first Indigenous Australian to be inducted into the prestigious Logie Awards Hall of Fame. This significant recognition marks a pivotal moment not only for Mailman but for Indigenous representation in Australian television and entertainment.
Mailman, who identifies as Bidjara and Maori, expressed the profound personal and cultural significance of this honour. “This means everything,” she stated in an interview. “For me and for our mob, this isn’t just recognition for me. It’s recognition for everyone who’s gone before me, who changed things for someone like me to be doing the work that I’m doing.”
A Long Overdue Milestone
Scheduled for induction on Sunday, Mailman will be the sixth woman to receive this esteemed accolade, joining a lineage of celebrated performers. She acknowledged that while progress is being made, the induction is “long overdue.” Mailman views this milestone as a powerful reflection of the evolving landscape of Australian television over the past two decades, noting a surge in compelling narratives emerging from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creative sector.
“Where the most exciting storytelling is coming from is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector,” Mailman observed. “It’s just getting stronger and stronger… look at the skill that’s there, that has been nurtured over a long time, to get to the point where we have so many of our mob doing incredible work.”
A Career Defined by Impactful Roles
Mailman’s recent accolades include a Logie win in 2024 for Best Lead Actress in a Drama, awarded for her compelling portrayal of politician Alex Irving in the ABC TV series Total Control. This was her sixth Logie, adding to previous wins for her work in notable productions such as Mabo, Redfern Now, and Mystery Road.
Reflecting on winning for the final season of Total Control in 2024, a year marked by the unsuccessful Voice to Parliament referendum, Mailman shared the profound impact of the series. “Over the four or so years [of making Total Control], we had a new prime minister, throw a pandemic in the middle of it, and then the country voted no,” she recalled. “To be part of this production that kept us [Indigenous peoples] in that focus, that kept our narrative strong, that meant everything to me. That meant everything to all of us who are part of it.”
Early Career and Breakthroughs
Mailman’s journey in television began with her first Logie win in 2002 for her role as Kelly Lewis in the popular drama The Secret Life of Us. She reprised this role, earning another Logie in 2004. Her acting career, however, originated in theatre, where she co-wrote and starred in the significant play The 7 Stages of Grieving in 1994. Her performance as Nona in Rachel Perkins’s 1998 film Radiance earned her an AFI Award (now AACTA) for Best Lead Actress, paving the way for her television breakthrough.
Looking back at The Secret Life of Us, Mailman described the experience as instrumental in her development as a screen actor. “That experience really gave me my training in front of a camera,” she said. “It introduced me to the art of filmmaking.” She cherished the relatable storylines and the sense of adventure the show provided, noting that it was her “first real foot into the [screen] industry” and that the support she received from the outset was crucial.
Championing First Nations Storytelling
Following her success in The Secret Life of Us, Mailman continued to build an impressive resume. She appeared in Redfern Now, the sketch series Black Comedy, and films such as Bran Nue Dae and The Sapphires. More recent roles include Mystery Road, the Indigenous superhero series Cleverman, and Warwick Thornton’s acclaimed film The New Boy.
A significant portion of Mailman’s work has focused on projects led by and telling the stories of First Nations people. “That’s where a lot of my work has gravitated towards: working with my own mob and telling stories that matter to me and my family and many communities around the country,” she explained. She views this as a vital correction to a historical lack of Indigenous voices on Australian screens.
“Our voices weren’t there,” Mailman stated. “Now to be part of that canon of storytelling that shows the breadth and diversity and dynamic of who we are as people and our culture and what our stories are means everything to me.”

Mailman expressed pride in following in the footsteps of Indigenous pioneers like Justine Saunders, Kylie Belling, Bob Maza, and Gary Foley, acknowledging their foundational work in creating opportunities for current artists. She also extended gratitude to Indigenous leaders and activists outside the performing arts who “fought the hard fight.”
She feels a deep sense of privilege in potentially inspiring the next generation of First Nations actors and creatives. Mailman highlighted her connection to peers and collaborators such as Rachel Perkins and Leah Purcell, noting, “A whole bunch of us grew up professionally together. I’m part of that community and I’m proud of that. I’m really proud I’m still doing what I’m doing and that I’ve been part of this group of artists who’ve led by example.”
Celebrating Blak Excellence at the Logies
Mailman’s induction into the Logies Hall of Fame occurs in a year where Indigenous talent is prominently featured across numerous award categories. A notable number of nominees for Most Popular New Talent, Best Lead Actor in a Drama, and Best Supporting Actor are First Nations individuals. Furthermore, Indigenous-led productions like Goolagong, Mystery Road: Origin, and Miranda Tapsell’s Top End Bub are contenders in major categories.
For Mailman, being recognized in the same year as such a strong cohort of Indigenous nominees amplifies the significance of her Hall of Fame induction. “That speaks volumes to me,” she remarked. “It’s so exciting to have that many of our actors be acknowledged in this way, which demonstrates absolutely their excellence in their craft.”
The prospect of sharing this moment with friends and colleagues, including fellow nominee Rob Collins, adds to the joy. “There’s going to be mob in the room!” Mailman exclaimed. “It’s going to be a real joy to have that energy, to know that everyone else is being celebrated along with me. It’s just a big warm hug.”
