A Year of Remembrance: Late Footballer’s Wedding Speech Revealed

Marking their one-year wedding anniversary, Rute Cardoso, the widow of football star Diogo Jota, has shared poignant footage of his wedding speech. The couple, who were teenage sweethearts, married on June 22, 2025, and had three children together. Tragically, less than two weeks after their ceremony in Porto, Jota and his brother Andre Silva passed away in a car crash on July 3.

Cardoso took to Instagram on Monday evening to share a brief video from their wedding day. The approximately 20-second clip captured joyous moments of the couple celebrating with guests and included a heartfelt extract from Jota’s speech. In the emotional address, Jota spoke of his unwavering devotion, stating, “Where the future takes us, maybe there’s someone here who knows better than I do. But the truth is, I don’t know and it doesn’t really matter to me as long as I’m with you. I love you forever, my Branquinha.”

The touching post garnered significant support, with close friend Ruben Neves among those who responded with affectionate emojis. As the first anniversary of his passing approaches, Jota’s memory continues to be honored.

Tributes and Honors for a Cherished Player

At the recent World Cup, Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez recognized Jota by naming him an honorary member of the squad. Players have been seen wearing special bracelets to commemorate the Liverpool legend. These were presented before the tournament by Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, each bearing Jota’s name.

Midfielder Vitinha explained the significance of the bracelets: “Basically, the story of the wristband is, when we went to meet with the prime minister, he offered us this wristband. They made sure that it was a wristband that we could wear on the pitch. It has all the specifics for us to be able to enter the pitch with it, with the name of all the players, plus the special name of Diogo Jota.” He added that they were given the choice to wear them, and the team chose to do so with great affection.

Jota’s parents, Isabel and Joaquim Silva, were also invited by the Portuguese Football Federation to attend their opening match. During the national anthems, a photograph of Jota was displayed on the stadium screens, a moment his parents watched with deep emotion.

Continuing Legacy on and off the Pitch

Scotland captain Andy Robertson, who shared the pitch with Jota at Liverpool, also pledged to Cardoso that he would play with Jota in his thoughts during the World Cup. The two had bonded during the previous World Cup, sharing aspirations of representing their respective nations in the 2026 tournament.

During his time at Liverpool, Jota made 123 appearances, scoring 47 goals, and was instrumental in their Premier League title win in the 2024-25 season. The Anfield faithful consistently paid tribute to Jota throughout the last season, with his name sung in the 20th minute of every game. The club also retired his No. 20 shirt in his honor.
