Doctor Who Faces Uncertain Future Amid ‘Woke’ Controversy and Ratings Slump

After 62 years of intergalactic adventures, the iconic BBC science fiction series, Doctor Who, appears to be at a critical juncture. Behind-the-scenes decisions and a shift in narrative focus have reportedly led to a decline, culminating in the cancellation of this year’s planned Christmas Special. The British Broadcasting Corporation has announced that the show will be put out to tender, seeking new producing partners to “secure its long-term future.” This development raises significant questions about the show’s trajectory, especially considering the ambitious plans articulated by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies just four years ago.

Partnership with Disney+ Deemed a ‘Failure’ by Fans

A significant financial deal with Disney+ was initially heralded as a move to propel the series to new heights. However, fan reception to the subsequent two series has been largely negative. Many viewers have characterized the partnership as a “failure,” citing “woke” storylines and finales that failed to deliver the satisfying resolutions they had come to expect. The perceived shift in the show’s thematic content has been a recurring point of contention.

Even Ncuti Gatwa, who recently departed the role of The Doctor after two series, has seemingly acknowledged the show’s struggles. During his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live UK last month, Gatwa humorously alluded to his character’s “constant crying,” and quipped about the comparatively lower viewership of Doctor Who compared to his previous work on “Sex Education.”

A Legacy of Shifting Fortunes

The excitement surrounding Russell T. Davies’ return in 2005, which revitalized the series and ushered in David Tennant’s beloved tenure, is a stark contrast to the current climate. While subsequent eras featuring Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi were generally well-received for their plot-driven narratives, Jodie Whittaker’s run garnered a more mixed reaction. Despite this, many fans lauded Whittaker’s performance as a standout element.

Ncuti Gatwa’s casting was initially met with fanfare, coinciding with the announcement of Disney’s involvement. However, as episodes aired, this enthusiasm reportedly gave way to growing concern among viewers. Tom Spilsbery, former editor of Doctor Who Magazine, commented to The Telegraph, “They were hoping for two more years and Russell had plans for a third and fourth series. You can argue how good or otherwise it was with Disney, but it’s now going to be perceived as a failure because, in the end, Disney walked away.”

Complex Plots and Inconsistent Scheduling Contribute to Decline

Sources indicate that the show’s intricate plots and an inconsistent broadcast schedule following David Tennant’s departure have made it a less accessible viewing experience, with one observer describing it as an “arcane lifestyle choice.” The backlash intensified with the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor, which some fans perceived as the show “going woke.” Further complicating matters, storylines delving into the Doctor’s past have been cited as contributing to viewer confusion.

Concerns Over Thematic Content and Social Justice Messaging

Under Russell T. Davies’ recent tenure, complaints about storylines being weighed down by political and social themes have been voiced by numerous fans. An episode in Gatwa’s second series, which explored the dangers of “incel culture,” drew particular criticism. A former writer for the show expressed frustration, stating, “We had this nonsense, this identity politics, and there is nothing less likely to make people feel at ease than by making them think they are being hectored or lectured.”

A survey conducted last year by London firm JL Partners revealed that half of current continuing viewers (46%) believe the series now prioritizes social justice and “woke” issues over quality. Overall, 38% of respondents felt the same, a figure that rose to 46% among those still actively watching the show.

James Johnson of JL Partners stated, “This is the first ever major poll done on attitudes to Doctor Who and the results are bleak. The public believe a once-great show has lost its way – and their biggest complaint is it puts pursuit of wokeness above entertainment value. The main words associated with it are rubbish, boring, and woke. If the BBC want to grow the show’s audience once more, they will need a total revamp – and to get back to telling entertaining stories rather than preaching lessons that simply do not have an audience among the British public.”

Representation and Character Introductions Spark Debate

Some social media critics have highlighted the increased diversity of the cast, the introduction of a drag queen villain, and the inclusion of transgender and non-binary characters as points of contention. During the show’s 60th Anniversary Special, viewers were introduced to Donna Noble’s transgender daughter, Rose, portrayed by trans actress Yasmin Finney. In one scene, David Tennant’s Doctor was corrected by Finney’s character for referring to a creature as “him.” Additionally, the introduction of Maestro, a screeching, wide-mouthed, ginger-haired non-binary villain played by American drag queen Jinkx Monsoon, also drew commentary.

Back in 2018, during Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Doctor, the series featured a heavily pregnant man as a supporting character.

Ratings Plummet from Previous Eras

These narrative choices appear to have coincided with a significant drop in viewership. David Tennant’s era saw up to 10 million viewers tune in, a figure that dwindled during Whittaker’s run, with her final episode attracting only 4.5 million viewers. Ncuti Gatwa’s regeneration scene, broadcast last month, was watched by just 3.4 million.

Gatwa’s own comments during his Saturday Night Live UK monologue suggest a personal disconnect with the role. He remarked, “I’ve had so many fantastic roles in my career. Millions of you watched me as Eric in Sex Education, and then about 12 of you watched me in Doctor Who. Maybe that’s why I kept crying!”

The ambiguity surrounding Gatwa’s departure and his regeneration into Billie Piper, who previously played companion Rose Tyler, has also fueled speculation about the show’s creative direction and any overarching plans. Producers and Davies himself offered vague explanations regarding Piper’s involvement, leaving many viewers questioning the clarity of the show’s narrative strategy.

A Lengthy Hiatus and Potential Revamp on the Horizon

With the cancellation of the Christmas Special, sources suggest that a prolonged hiatus could be beneficial for the series. One insider told The Times, “The show doesn’t necessarily need money, but it needs a rethink and perhaps an abandonment of the preachiness we have seen recently.”

The move to put the series out to tender has led to predictions that it could be “four or five years” before new episodes are developed. This potential hiatus suggests a significant revamp, possibly as transformative as the 2005 reboot. A former writer concluded, “It will inevitably return at some point, but first it needs a very long rest. At the moment Doctor Who is a toxic brand.”
