Dr. Amir Khan, a familiar face on British television and a practicing NHS General Practitioner, has shared a concise yet vital message for the public regarding skin moles and marks. In a recent video posted to his Instagram account, Dr. Khan emphasized the importance of self-awareness concerning skin changes, urging individuals to “Get to know your moles.” This advice stems from his participation in a live skin lesion clinic on ITV’s ‘This Morning,’ where he examined various skin spots for potential concerns.

Understanding Your Skin: The Core Message

During the segment on ‘This Morning,’ Dr. Khan and his colleagues reviewed numerous moles and skin lesions. While most were identified as common and harmless, one particular spot raised concerns, highlighting the critical need for vigilance. Dr. Khan explained that individuals do not need to be medical experts to monitor their skin. The key is to recognize when a mole or mark exhibits new characteristics, such as changes in size, shape, or color, or if it starts bleeding, itching, or fails to heal.

“Get to know your moles and marks,” Dr. Khan reiterated. He specifically advised checking often-overlooked areas like the scalp, the back, behind the ears, the backs of the legs, and between the toes. His primary recommendation is to seek professional medical attention for any suspicious findings rather than delaying assessment.

Why Regular Skin Checks Matter

Dr. Khan underscored that while the majority of skin lesions encountered in general practice are benign, the potential for missing a serious condition like melanoma necessitates thorough self-examination and professional consultation. He stated that a skin check can be completed in a matter of minutes and could significantly impact health outcomes. Early detection of skin cancers, particularly melanoma, is crucial for effective treatment.

What Are Moles and How Do They Form?

Moles, medically known as nevi, are common skin growths that develop when pigment-producing cells, called melanocytes, grow in clusters. Most moles typically appear during childhood, adolescence, or before the age of 40. They can manifest anywhere on the body, including the scalp, fingers, toes, and even under the nails.

Several factors influence mole development and appearance:

  • Genetics: A family history of moles can increase an individual’s likelihood of developing more.
  • Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can affect the number and appearance of moles.
  • Skin Type: Individuals with fairer skin often tend to have more moles.

While most moles are harmless, experts emphasize the importance of monitoring for new moles that appear in adulthood or any changes in existing moles. Such alterations in size, shape, or color warrant professional evaluation.

Recognizing Warning Signs: The ABCDE Guide and Beyond

The National Health Service (NHS) provides a helpful guide, the ABCDE method, to help identify potentially concerning moles:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.
  • B – Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
  • C – Color: The color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
  • D – Diameter: The spot is larger than 6 millimeters across (about the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can sometimes be smaller.
  • E – Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, color, or elevation, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching, or crusting occurs.

Beyond the ABCDEs, individuals should also be aware of:

  • Moles that bleed, itch, or become inflamed.
  • New or unusual skin marks that do not heal within a few weeks.
  • Moles that appear significantly different from other moles on the body (the “ugly duckling” sign).

When to Seek Medical Advice

If any mole or skin mark exhibits the characteristics described above, or if you have a general feeling of concern, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. The NHS advises that if a GP suspects a mole might be melanoma, the patient will be referred to a hospital specialist for further assessment, typically within a two-week timeframe.

Dr. Khan’s simple yet profound advice, “Get to know your moles,” serves as a crucial reminder that proactive self-monitoring, combined with timely professional medical evaluation, is paramount for maintaining skin health and potentially detecting serious conditions at their earliest, most treatable stages.
