A 39-year-old drag performer known as Crystal Couture and CC Quinn, Darren Meah-Moore, was found dead in a Cardiff city centre alleyway under a pile of cardboard boxes. The married entertainer, previously convicted as a sex offender, had left Pulse nightclub in full drag attire earlier that night.
Final Encounters Captured on CCTV
Surveillance footage shows Meah-Moore engaging in intimate activities with two men before a third encounter with a dog owner. The man, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, testified at the coroner’s inquest that he led Meah-Moore to a secluded car park. There, sexual activity began between the two men, and the dog joined in at Meah-Moore’s request.
The man stated: “Because it was consensual and desired I let him do what he was asked to do. I had never seen something like that before. I could have stopped it and I should have stopped it but I didn’t.” He added that he lost interest as the activity with the dog continued, after which Meah-Moore fell asleep and became unresponsive.
Medical Findings and Cause of Death
Forensic examinations detected both human and non-human semen in Meah-Moore’s body, with DNA confirming a match to the man’s dog. Pathologists ruled out trauma as the cause of death. Initial medical reports list the cause as sudden death in a man with bronchial asthma, linked to alcohol consumption and recent sexual activity including anal intercourse.
Coroner David Regan questioned whether a sensitivity to dogs, potentially from the animal’s semen, contributed to the death. Detective Superintendent Paul Raikes confirmed Meah-Moore had a dog sensitivity, but tests could not definitively attribute it as the cause.
The dog owner was briefly detained on suspicion of manslaughter but released without charges.
Discovery of the Body
Meah-Moore’s husband reported him missing the next morning. A club employee saw him enter a nearby car park. Nightclub manager Sean Rogers checked the area, spotting part of Meah-Moore’s dress. Upon investigation, Rogers found the body under flattened cardboard boxes deliberately placed on top.
Rogers attempted to rouse Meah-Moore, then performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family Tributes and Background
Loved ones described Meah-Moore as caring and central to Cardiff’s gay community. A talented gymnast, he also ran a jewellery business called Bling Bling Bling UK. A family statement read: “Darren Moore was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was always the life and soul wherever he went, he was our social butterfly. He made sure he had a lot of time for people, and never judged others.”
The family expressed gratitude for support and requested privacy during their grief.
Meah-Moore’s criminal history includes a 1999 prison sentence for four counts of raping a boy under 16 and a 2011 three-year community order with 300 hours of unpaid work for breaching a sex offender order.
The four-day inquest in Pontypridd continues.
