War’s Brutal Toll Crushes Dubai Tourism: Revenues Plunge 80%

Dubai’s vibrant tourism sector faces severe setbacks from the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. Last year, the emirate attracted 19.59 million international visitors, cementing its status as a global travel hotspot. However, the war, which erupted on February 28, has triggered sharp declines in visitor numbers, leaving businesses across the city grappling with empty tables and rooms.

Restaurants Hit Hard by Revenue Drops

Typically bustling Dubai eateries now stand half-empty most evenings. Natasha Sideris, founder of the Tashas hospitality group, launched her first restaurant here in 2014 and expanded to 14 locations employing over 1,000 staff. She reports revenues at her venues, favored by locals and expats, have fallen more than 50%, with tourist-heavy spots suffering 70-80% drops.

To preserve jobs, Sideris implemented 30% salary cuts across all staff, including herself. “The current situation is brutal,” she states. “I had a choice – either fire 30% of my staff or cut salaries to save jobs. I chose the latter for now.” Proximity to residential areas has cushioned some outlets, but the strain persists industry-wide.

A senior executive at another restaurant chain notes footfall has plummeted to 15-20% of normal levels, prompting unpaid leave for over half the workforce and temporary closures. “We have no option,” the executive says. “We’ve already shut down a few outlets temporarily, and the rest are operating with minimal staff.”

Hotels and Travel Face Occupancy Crisis

The downturn ripples through hotels, airlines, and agencies. Occupancy rates in Dubai hotels dipped to 15-20% soon after the war began, far below seasonal norms, according to Mamoun Hmiden, chief business officer at travel platform Wego. Luxury spots on Palm Jumeirah slashed prices by up to 50% during Eid to lure locals.

“The uncertainty is disrupting everyone at the moment,” Hmiden observes. Some chains have shuttered sections or properties, blaming renovations. A hospitality group executive reveals single-digit occupancy at certain sites, justifying brief closures to trim costs.

Business travel suffers too, with conferences postponed. Varun Raj, cluster director of sales and marketing at Majestic Hotels, which manages 450 rooms, reports record-low occupancy and cancellations extending beyond April. “A lot of events have been cancelled, making it difficult for travellers to plan ahead,” Raj says.

Airport Disruptions and Security Threats

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international passengers with 95.2 million travelers last year, saw thousands of flights canceled. Emirates now runs a reduced schedule amid recovery efforts. Early chaos stranded tens of thousands, resolved via special evacuations.

The UAE endured over 2,400 missiles and drones, targeting airports, ports, and civilian zones including hotels. Officials report 90% interception success, though debris hit residential areas, the airport, and sites like the Fairmont on Palm Jumeirah. Across the UAE, 11 fatalities and over 185 injuries occurred.

Broader Economic Fallout

AirDNA data shows 226,500 short-term rental cancellations in the UAE from February 28 to March 29. Migrant workers powering hospitality face reduced hours or layoffs, evoking COVID-19 hardships. A South Asian waiter at a luxury restaurant laments, “It feels like we are back to the Covid-19 period.” Rights groups highlight vulnerabilities from recruitment debts.

Regionally, Tourism Economics projects 23-38 million fewer visitors and $34-56 billion in lost spending. Hmiden warns prolonged conflict could derail summer tourism.

Government Support Measures

Dubai allocated $272.26 million in aid for tourism and businesses over three to six months, deferring fees and tourism dirhams. Revival plans include marketing campaigns. One official notes, “The war is out of our control, but we are preparing for when it ends.”

Sideris seeks rent relief and eyes recovery by October if hostilities cease, but warns of layoffs otherwise. “We’ve got enough cash to see us through a month or two… maximum three,” she adds.
