Since its debut in 1985, EastEnders has captivated audiences with dramatic murders, chaotic weddings, and turbulent romances set in Albert Square. While onscreen pairings have created iconic moments, several actors have formed genuine relationships behind the scenes. These real-life romances, though heartfelt, often proved short-lived compared to the soap’s enduring drama.
Steve McFadden and Lucy Benjamin
Steve McFadden, known as Phil Mitchell, and Lucy Benjamin, who portrayed Lisa Fowler, developed a romance after she joined the cast in 1998. Onscreen, Lisa became one of Phil’s key love interests and the shooter in the memorable ‘Who Shot Phil?’ storyline. Their relationship eventually ended after some time together.
Nadia Sawalha and Marc Bannerman
Nadia Sawalha appeared as Annie Palmer from 1997 to 1999. During this period, the 61-year-old actress grew close to Marc Bannerman, who played Gianni di Marco. Marc provided crucial support following the tragic suicide of Nadia’s husband, Justin Mildwater, in 1997. She shared, “If it wasn’t for Marc, I don’t know what I’d have done.” Their bond lasted three years before parting ways. Nadia has since been married to TV producer Mark Adderley since 2002, and they share daughters Maddie, 23, and Kiki, 18.
Emma Barton and Joel Beckett
Joel Beckett joined as Jake Moon from 2004 to 2006, while Emma Barton began playing Honey Mitchell in 2005. The pair started dating the following year and kept their three-year relationship private. After their split, Emma entered a long-term partnership with television host Stephen Mulhern, whom she met during a 2009 pantomime production.
Shona McGarty and Matt Lapinskas
Shona McGarty has portrayed Whitney Dean since 2008, and she dated co-star Matt Lapinskas, who played Anthony Moon, for over 18 months from 2011 to 2013. Their breakup coincided with Matt’s departure from the show. Reflecting in 2023, Matt noted, “You have exes, you live, learn and move forward. Shona is still doing well, she is still in EastEnders and smashing it.” He added, “I wish nothing but the best for everybody, and everyone teaches you something in life. It’s one of those things where stuff happens, but you grow and learn from it.” Shona confirmed the amicable split via tweet during Matt’s Dancing on Ice stint: “Yes, it’s true, Matt and I have split, but it has nothing to do with Brianne. Clear head and new beginnings! Mwah xx.”
Jacqueline Jossa and Tony Discipline
Jacqueline Jossa, famous as Lauren Branning, briefly dated Tony Discipline, who played Tyler Moon, for one year. Their characters shared a passionate fling onscreen while the actors’ romance unfolded off it. Sources indicated the pair grew apart but remained friends.
Joe Swash and Kara Tointon
Despite playing siblings on EastEnders, Joe Swash and Kara Tointon pursued a romance off-camera. Kara joined in 2005 as part of the Miller family and first dated co-star James Alexandrou, who played Martin Fowler, for about 18 months starting in 2006. Her relationship with Joe ended in 2010. Joe later reflected, “She genuinely does everything right. It was my fault it broke down. I didn’t know what I had until she was gone.” Kara later partnered with Marius Jensen, with whom she had two sons in 2018 and 2021, before their separation the following year.
