England plans to award Rehan Ahmed his first home Test cap next month for the three-match series against New Zealand. The 21-year-old Leicestershire wrist spinner emerges as the frontrunner for the primary spin role after all five of his prior Test appearances occurred overseas.

Ashes Lessons Shape Spin Strategy

During the recent Ashes tour, selectors bypassed established spinner Shoaib Bashir and relied on part-time spinner Will Jacks to bolster batting depth. Jacks secured only six wickets across four Tests at an average of 53.66, conceding 4.9 runs per over and failing to offer the control Ben Stokes’ side needed.

Despite this, England intends to persist with an all-rounder in the lead spin position. The setup gains reinforcement from Marcus North’s upcoming role as national selector. While Jacks excels in white-ball cricket, Ahmed brings an aggressive edge, especially in second innings.

Ahmed’s Proven Track Record

Ahmed debuted as England’s youngest Test player during the Pakistan tour three-and-a-half years ago—the same trip where Jacks earned his cap. He claimed seven wickets on debut in Karachi in December 2022 and has since taken 22 wickets total, all on the subcontinent.

Selected for the England Lions tour of Australia, Ahmed appeared set for an Ashes promotion before a leg injury sidelined him. He demonstrated composure later at the T20 World Cup, partnering Jacks in a thrilling chase against New Zealand.

Currently competing in the Indian Premier League, Ahmed notched five County Championship centuries in 2025 and grabbed six wickets in first-class matches against Sussex and Surrey before heading overseas last month.

Opening Order Shake-Up

Selectors face another key decision: replacing Zak Crawley at the top for the Lord’s opener. Durham’s Ben McKinney leads the race ahead of teammate Emilio Gay and Glamorgan’s Asa Tribe. Somerset’s James Rew’s trial at opener yielded two ducks this week.
