Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has returned to the team’s training camp, approximately two weeks after a serious incident at his Virginia home involving his wife and son. Bieniemy had been granted an indefinite leave of absence following the events of July 26 but rejoined his team on the practice field, expressing his eagerness to be back. His return marks a significant moment for both Bieniemy and the Chiefs as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Bieniemy’s Return to the Practice Field

Footage captured by reporters showed Bieniemy walking onto the training grounds, accompanied by former Chiefs running back Damien Williams. Upon his arrival, he was heard saying, “It’s great to be back,” and shared a moment of embrace with Chiefs broadcaster Mitch Holthus. The team also shared a photo of Bieniemy on social media, captioning it “Happy to have EB back” with a heart emoji, signaling their support and relief at his return.

The Incident at the Bieniemy Home

The circumstances leading to Bieniemy’s leave of absence involved a shooting at his Virginia residence on July 26. His son, Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was arrested and subsequently charged by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. These charges stem from an incident that left Elijah’s mother, Mia Bieniemy, with serious injuries.

Details of the Shooting

Mia Bieniemy sustained injuries from multiple gunshot wounds, requiring surgery. Reports indicate she was shot in the left forearm and shoulder, with a bullet traveling across her chest. Fragments of the bullet reportedly remain in her body following the operation. Mia herself called 911 after the incident, and dispatchers alerted responders to the presence of a weapon within the home.

Elijah Bieniemy’s Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Elijah Bieniemy was taken into custody and is being held without bond. A Virginia judge has approved a motion for a mental health evaluation, as indicated in court documents filed by his public defender, who cited significant mental health issues. A court hearing previously scheduled for August 31 will be rescheduled to accommodate this evaluation.

Previous Police Encounters at the Residence

It has since come to light that the shooting incident was not the first time law enforcement had been involved with the Bieniemy household in recent months. Reports detail at least three prior contacts with the police originating from the home.

Firearms Dispute

Just two days prior to the shooting, on July 24, Elijah Bieniemy reportedly called the police to complain that his parents were withholding his firearms. According to an incident report, he stated that as a UFC fighter, he felt unable to defend himself without his weapons. He also expressed concerns about his CPR license and his parents’ insistence that he surrender his firearms to continue living at their property.

Welfare Checks

On June 1, Loudoun County Deputies responded to a request for a welfare check on Elijah initiated by a college counselor. Officers determined at the time that no weapons were accessible, and the situation was classified as non-urgent. Another report, filed on June 22, involved a suspicious circumstance with two individuals matching the descriptions of Elijah and Mia Bieniemy at the residence. This incident was classified as Stage 3, indicating an urgent but non-life-threatening situation.

Support and Team Communication

Throughout his wife’s recovery, Eric Bieniemy has remained closely connected with the Chiefs organization. He has reportedly watched livestreams of practices and provided feedback to the team. Head Coach Andy Reid had previously stated his support for Bieniemy, emphasizing the importance of family matters while assuring the team’s readiness for his eventual return.

Player and Coach Reactions

Travis Kelce, a star player for the Chiefs, has previously lauded Bieniemy, calling him “one of my favorite coaches of all time” and crediting him with a significant role in his player development. Bieniemy served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022 before returning to the role this offseason after a stint with the Washington Commanders.

Looking Ahead to the Season

With Bieniemy back at the helm of the offense, the Chiefs are focused on building momentum for the upcoming season. Their preseason schedule includes a game against the Los Angeles Rams, followed by their Week 1 regular-season matchup against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14.

Conclusion

The return of Eric Bieniemy to the Kansas City Chiefs training camp signifies a step forward for the coach as he navigates a challenging personal period. His presence is welcomed by the team, and attention now turns to the upcoming NFL season, with Bieniemy resuming his crucial role in guiding the Chiefs’ offense.
