Erika Kirk, widow of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, announced she is spending time with family following a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. She plans to discuss the rise of political violence on her late husband’s show this Wednesday.

Traumatic Evacuation

Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from the Los Angeles area opened fire, prompting a swift evacuation. Kirk, among the first to flee, was seen in tears, flanked by security, and heard crying, ‘I just want to go home.’

Video footage captured Allen sprinting past a security checkpoint toward the ballroom doors. Wolf Blitzer, nearby inside the venue, described the chaos: ‘Apparently they got the gunman, he had a major weapon there, it was so worrisome. The noise was so loud. I was a few feet away from the gunman who was shooting randomly, half a dozen shots they were so loud.’

Attendees, including top journalists, celebrities, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, sought cover amid the pandemonium. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed to safety shortly before Kirk’s group.

Kirk’s Statement

On Monday, Kirk shared her thoughts online: ‘Saturday was yet another traumatic example of the evil in our country and the continued rise in political violence. I’m taking time to spend with my family.’ She added, ‘Enough is enough,’ before confirming her upcoming appearance.

Derek Myers, sponsor of Turning Point Action, posted on X: ‘Erika is okay but very upset. She was crying.’

Shooter Details and Aftermath

Allen, an educator, carried a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives. Authorities took him down quickly; he now faces firearms and assault charges. Police believe he was a guest at the hotel.

A Secret Service agent wearing a protective vest was shot at close range but is expected to recover fully. President Trump confirmed speaking with the agent: ‘I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great.’

Addressing the nation in a tuxedo two hours later, Trump called Allen a ‘sick person – a very sick person,’ adding, ‘He’s a lone wolf, a whack job. These are crazy people. Sick, sick people.’ He stated defiantly, ‘When you’re impactful, they go after you. They seem to think he was a lone wolf. We’re not going to let anybody take over our society.’

The incident echoes the 1981 shooting of President Ronald Reagan at the same venue. No other fatalities occurred. The White House plans to reschedule the dinner within 30 days, aiming for a ‘bigger and better’ event, as the city remains on high alert.

This marks another encounter with gun violence for Kirk, just seven months after her husband’s assassination at Utah Valley University.
