FIFA has urged Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to support the construction of a permanent national soccer home, warning that the country risks falling behind leading football nations without swift action.

Calls from Global Leaders for Action

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom and Asian Football Confederation President Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa have delivered letters to federal and New South Wales state governments. These communications back Football Australia’s bid for a dedicated facility to serve as the base for national teams.

Australia’s Unique Position in World Cup History

Australia stands out as one of only four nations—alongside Denmark, Poland, and Senegal—that qualified for the 2022 men’s World Cup without a national training base. Fears mount that the Socceroos, who posted their best-ever finish in Qatar, and the Matildas could slip further in global rankings without a purpose-built home.

Elite setups like France’s Clairefontaine and England’s St George’s Park set the global standard. In contrast, the Socceroos trained at the outdated Leichhardt Oval during a recent international window and used the New South Wales Rugby League Centre of Excellence for 2024 World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon.

Former Socceroos coach Graham Arnold labeled Football Australia as ‘homeless’ amid preparations for those key matches.

Asian Rivals Pull Ahead

While Australia lags, competitors across Asia—including Japan, South Korea, Qatar, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and rising force Indonesia—operate state-of-the-art facilities or actively build new ones. The Socceroos prepare to enter the 2026 World Cup without a dedicated base.

Football Australia’s Push

A Football Australia spokesperson emphasized the need: “A national Home of Football is a long overdue facility that will benefit the entire Australian football community—connecting our senior national teams to grassroots and community football.”

The spokesperson added: “The Matildas and Socceroos and our youth national teams continue to overachieve and make Australia proud on the world stage in the most watched and attended global sporting events. We can only sustain this success by keeping pace with international standards, and a national home of football is both critical and overdue. The absence of such a facility puts Australia at risk of falling behind the rest of the world.”

Football Australia eyes a site at Sydney Olympic Park and seeks up to $50 million in federal funding. The proposed center would feature advanced sport science labs, training fields, gyms, office space, and programs from professional to grassroots levels.

Government’s Response

A government spokesperson stated: “The Australian government is a strong supporter of Australian football, providing significant funding to Football Australia and investing in major events like the recent AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026—the most successful women’s Asian Cup ever. We continue to support football and grassroots sports through investments like our $200 million Play Our Way program, which is the most significant commitment ever to women and girls’ sporting programs and facilities. All investments in capital infrastructure, such as stadiums, are considered as part of the usual budget processes.”
