Two people have been charged with drug-related offenses following the seizure of suspected fentanyl during a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) stop in Garden River First Nation. The Anishinabek Police Service conducted the operation in the early morning hours of September 16, encountering a vehicle near the intersection of Highway 17B and Belleau Lake Road.

Drug Seizure and Arrests

During the routine RIDE stop, officers initiated a roadside investigation that revealed the driver was allegedly in violation of a probation order. The driver, a 33-year-old local man, was subsequently arrested without incident. A search of the vehicle, conducted as part of the arrest, led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 4.5 grams of suspected fentanyl. The seized substance was described as appearing in both green and blue forms.

Following the drug seizure, both the driver and his passenger, a 28-year-old woman from Sault Ste. Marie, were formally charged. The charges include possession of a controlled substance. The driver faces an additional charge for failing to comply with a probation order.

Release and Ongoing Investigation

Both individuals were released from custody on undertakings, which are legal documents promising to appear in court and adhere to specific conditions. The Anishinabek Police Service has indicated that the investigation into this matter is continuing. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist their ongoing efforts.

Community Safety and RIDE Programs

RIDE programs are a common law enforcement strategy aimed at deterring impaired driving and enhancing road safety. These stops, often conducted without prior notice, involve police checking drivers for signs of impairment, including alcohol and drug intoxication. Beyond impaired driving, RIDE stops can also lead to the discovery of other criminal activities, such as drug possession, outstanding warrants, or other violations.

The seizure of illicit drugs, particularly potent substances like fentanyl, highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating the drug trade. Fentanyl is an opioid that is significantly more potent than morphine and is often mixed with other drugs, increasing the risk of overdose. Its presence in the community, even in small quantities, is a serious concern for public health and safety officials.

Anishinabek Police Service, as an Indigenous police force, serves several First Nations communities in the region, including Garden River First Nation. Their efforts in conducting RIDE stops and investigating drug-related incidents are crucial for maintaining safety within these communities. The collaboration between local police services and community members is often vital in addressing such issues effectively.

Reporting Information

The Anishinabek Police Service encourages anyone with information related to this specific incident or other criminal activity to come forward. Tips can be provided directly to the Anishinabek Police Service by calling 705-946-4196 or through their online reporting tool. For those who wish to provide information anonymously, the Crime Stoppers program remains a confidential option.

The successful interdiction of drugs at a RIDE stop underscores the importance of these enforcement initiatives. Police services across the country rely on these operations not only to remove impaired drivers from the road but also to disrupt the flow of illegal substances and hold those involved in drug trafficking accountable. The charges laid in this case are a step in that ongoing process.
