Giuliana Rancic has revisited the painful end of her past relationship with actor Jerry O’Connell, sharing new details about their 2004 split and describing the experience as “traumatizing” and “humiliating.” Speaking on a recent episode of the “Bill and Giuliana” podcast alongside her husband, Bill Rancic, the television personality addressed O’Connell’s recent comments about their breakup on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera.” Rancic, 51, characterized O’Connell, 52, as “cold” and accused him of “downplaying” their year-and-a-half-long romance.
Rancic Responds to O’Connell’s Account
O’Connell had previously admitted on Ripa’s show to being a “terrible boyfriend” to Rancic. He recounted their breakup in 2004, which Rancic detailed in her 2015 memoir “Going Off Script.” According to Rancic’s book, O’Connell ended their relationship via his Los Angeles condo’s intercom, reportedly saying, “Nope, sorry, homegirl… Things change, but you take care, OK?”
In his conversation with Ripa, O’Connell suggested Rancic had arrived “unannounced” at his residence while he was with another woman, emphasizing that she did not possess a key. This portrayal implied to Rancic that O’Connell viewed their relationship as less serious than she did. Countering this, Rancic asserted on the podcast that she and O’Connell had been “together 24/7 every day, every night” for the duration of their relationship, with the exception of their breakup itself.
“You could listen to his interview and think maybe this was an easy relationship, he was dating a bunch of girls, but no. It was a real relationship,” Rancic stated, emphasizing the depth of their connection.
The Intercom Breakup and Alleged Infidelity
Rancic elaborated on the circumstances leading up to their final split. She explained that she hadn’t heard from O’Connell for five days prior to the intercom incident, which caused her significant worry. “Finally, I said, ‘Jerry, I’m gonna call the police,’ like I’m really worried about you,” she recalled writing to him. O’Connell reportedly responded, urging her not to call the police and informing her he had returned to Los Angeles and was at his condo.
Upon arriving at his condo, Rancic recounted that the confrontation began through the intercom before moving to his balcony. “He was literally standing on the balcony looking at me…. He didn’t want to see me in person. He didn’t have enough courage to come down and see me face-to-face, like a foot away, and instead did it from a balcony,” she claimed. She described the event as “devastating, heartbreaking, humiliating” and “traumatizing.”
Rancic also revisited an earlier instance of alleged infidelity involving Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell in 2003. While O’Connell was filming a movie in London, Rancic claimed their relationship was “perfect” until photos surfaced of O’Connell and Halliwell holding hands. “I walked into a voiceover booth and fell to the ground, crying hysterically,” Rancic recalled. “It was awful. So upsetting and so devastating.” She stated that when she confronted O’Connell about the photos, he allegedly responded, “Yeah, sorry. I don’t know what to tell you. I screwed up.”
Reconciliation and Final Separation
Despite the alleged infidelity, Rancic said O’Connell managed to win her back. She described him calling a friend in tears and then appearing at her apartment, allegedly begging for forgiveness in the lobby and following her to the elevator. “‘I am so sorry. I made the biggest mistake of my life. I don’t know what I was thinking. Please take me back. You’re the love of my life,'” she recalled him saying.
Rancic took him back, but their relationship ended permanently a few months later. The final breakup reportedly occurred after O’Connell went missing following a trip to Las Vegas, culminating in the now-infamous intercom conversation.
Moving On and Present Day
Reflecting on the past, Rancic stated, “The whole thing was just crazy. Listen, at the end of the day, you know, here we are 22 years later and, obviously, we both moved on.” She has been happily married to Bill Rancic since 2007, and O’Connell has been married to actress Rebecca Romijn since 2007.
Rancic expressed that she appreciates O’Connell being an “open book,” even if his memory is “a little fuzzy.” She emphasized that her intention in discussing the past on the podcast is “coming from a nice place. It’s coming from a place of love.” She concluded by stating, “I truly believe everything happens for a reason. We are both happily married now, we both have great families, and we are both exactly where we’re meant to be.”
Earlier in the week, Rancic had initially reacted to O’Connell’s comments on social media, posting a video of herself on vacation and noting his “fuzzy” memory. While she considered a brief statement, she ultimately decided to dedicate a full podcast episode to “deep dive” into the experience.
