Activist Grace Tame has recounted a period in her late teens when, struggling with the aftermath of sexual abuse, she fled to California. At just 18 years old, Tame experienced a breakdown and found herself in difficult circumstances, including drug use and precarious living situations, as she detailed on the ‘Cracking On’ podcast. This period followed her experience of sexual abuse by her former schoolteacher, Nicolaas Ockert Bester, who was later jailed in 2011 for the offenses committed when Tame was a 15-year-old student at a private school in Hobart, Tasmania.

A Tumultuous Period in California

Following the abuse, a traumatized Tame left Australia for the United States shortly after turning 18. She purchased an inexpensive, likely unroadworthy car for $1,500 and embarked on a journey up the California coastline. During this time, she sought work on a marijuana farm and became involved with drugs. “I moved to the United States when I was 18, as soon as I could leave home essentially,” Tame explained. “I was still sort of managing this trauma which was very new at the time.” She described how she “kind of fell apart again” and engaged in “lots of rogue things,” including working on a “weed farm” and getting into “pretty dodgy situations.”

Her mode of transport was a car filled with her belongings, which she parked in parking lots. Tame recalled driving along the scenic California coast and sleeping wherever she could find a place to rest. This period of self-imposed exile and struggle was a direct response to the unresolved trauma she was grappling with.

Mother’s Intervention and Threat

Tame’s mother, Penny, became increasingly concerned when her daughter ceased communication. Driven by parental intuition, Penny flew to the United States with the intention of finding and rescuing Grace. Before her mother’s arrival, Tame had stopped speaking to her family, leaving her mother worried about her well-being.

The reunion was marked by a significant confrontation. “After a very dramatic yelling match at a petrol station, mum decided that she wouldn’t turn me into the local police after finding my stash of substances,” Grace recounted. Her mother’s intervention included the threat of reporting her to the California authorities due to the drugs Tame was carrying. This dramatic ultimatum, however, ultimately led to her mother taking a more supportive role.

Support and Recovery

Following the intense encounter at the petrol station, Penny Tame actively assisted her daughter. She helped Grace secure employment and find a stable place to live, providing the foundational support needed for recovery. Grace Tame humorously remarked on her mother’s capabilities, suggesting she would have made an excellent Australian of the Year herself, noting her articulate nature and potential to avoid governmental friction.

Tame has previously spoken about the profound impact of abuse, including her experiences with substance abuse and self-harm in the years following her childhood trauma. She has highlighted that the effects of abuse extend far beyond the initial event, impacting an individual’s entire life trajectory. “Even after it’s over, the effects of the abuse don’t just stop. It impacts your entire life going forward, and predators know that,” she stated in another context. Her coping mechanisms included drug and alcohol abuse, self-harm, extensive piercing, and adopting an identity that did not feel authentic. She also described finding herself in abusive relationships, sometimes with older men who were aware of her past trauma.

Advocacy and Moving Forward

Despite the profound challenges she faced, Grace Tame has channeled her experiences into becoming a prominent advocate for survivors of sexual assault. Her work has brought significant attention to issues surrounding abuse and trauma. In recognition of her advocacy and public service, she was named the 2021 Australian of the Year. Tame’s journey from a troubled teenager seeking refuge in California to a national figure advocating for change underscores the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of support systems, even those that emerge from dramatic interventions.

Her story serves as a powerful testament to overcoming adversity and using personal pengalaman to foster broader societal awareness and change. The support provided by her mother during a critical juncture played a pivotal role in her path toward healing and advocacy.
