A man who attempted to evade law enforcement while already in handcuffs has been sentenced to prison. The dramatic incident, captured on body camera, unfolded as John Robinson, 48, struggled with officers.
Attempted Escape While Restrained
The footage shows Robinson, from London, inside an SUV in Cwmbran. As officers attempted to take him into custody, he can be heard protesting, claiming he was disabled. Despite being handcuffed, Robinson then reportedly grabbed the steering wheel and accelerated, driving away from the scene with the vehicle’s doors still open. The SUV was eventually stopped.
Guilty Pleas and Sentencing
At a subsequent court appearance, Robinson entered guilty pleas to several charges, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and possession of an imitation firearm in a public place.
Newport Crown Court handed down a sentence of 12 months imprisonment. In addition to the jail term, Robinson received a driving disqualification of 42 months and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
