The Honda Jazz e:HEV, a compact supermini, continues to impress with its blend of practicality, comfort, and efficient hybrid technology. This review delves into the features and performance of the latest iteration, highlighting why it remains a strong contender in its segment.

Spacious Interior and Versatile Seating

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the Honda Jazz e:HEV offers a surprisingly spacious interior. The boot capacity is generous, easily accommodating a week’s worth of groceries. A durable plastic liner in the boot adds to its practicality, simplifying clean-up after transporting items like dogs, muddy boots, or garden supplies. With the rear seats in place, there is 304 litres of luggage space, which expands significantly to an impressive 1,205 litres when the seats are folded down.

A standout feature of the Jazz is Honda’s innovative Magic Seats. These rear seats have bases that can flip upwards, creating additional vertical storage space. This ingenious design allows for the transport of taller or awkwardly shaped items that would typically be challenging to fit into many rival superminis.

User-Friendly Controls and Technology

The Jazz e:HEV is designed for an enjoyable and uncomplicated driving experience. Its controls are intuitive and free from unnecessary complexity. Essential climate functions are managed by easily accessible physical buttons, while a responsive 9-inch touchscreen handles other vehicle functions. For many drivers, integration with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto offers seamless access to familiar apps and navigation, reducing the need to navigate the car’s native menus.

Comfort and Accessibility

Getting in and out of the Honda Jazz is particularly easy, thanks to wide-opening doors and a high seating position. This feature is a significant advantage for individuals with mobility issues. Higher trim levels include heated front seats as standard. Drivers can find an optimal driving position with ample adjustment available for both the seat and the steering wheel.

While three adults can manage in the rear seats for short trips, two adults will find the space more comfortable for longer journeys. The cabin provides a pleasant environment, balancing functionality with a sense of refinement.

On-Road Performance and Handling

On the road, the Jazz e:HEV delivers a composed and refined driving experience. The suspension is tuned to be on the firmer side, yet it manages to absorb road imperfections like potholes and speed bumps effectively without causing discomfort. This balanced approach to suspension tuning contributes to a stable and comfortable ride.

Visibility is excellent, aided by narrow front pillars and a large windscreen, which provide an unobstructed view of the surroundings. Parking is made straightforward and stress-free with the inclusion of front and rear parking sensors, complemented by a clear reversing camera system.

Hybrid Powertrain and Efficiency

The Honda Jazz e:HEV is powered by a 1.5-litre, self-charging petrol-hybrid system that produces a combined output of 105 bhp. In urban driving conditions, the car operates quietly, seamlessly switching between its electric and petrol power sources to maximise efficiency. A key benefit of this self-charging system is that it does not require plugging in, offering convenience for everyday use.

Fuel economy is a significant highlight of the Jazz e:HEV. During testing, an average fuel consumption of 59.5 mpg was achieved, closely approaching the official combined figure of 61.4 mpg. This impressive efficiency contributes to lower running costs and a reduced environmental impact.

Performance Figures

  • Engine: 1.5 i-MMD hybrid
  • Power: 105 bhp
  • Torque: 96 lb/ft
  • Transmission: CVT
  • Top Speed: 108 mph
  • 0-62 mph: 9.6 seconds
  • Official Economy: 61.4 mpg
  • CO2 Emissions: 105 g/km

Trim Levels and Driving Experience

The Honda Jazz e:HEV is available in four trim levels: Elegance, Advance, Advance Sport, and Crosstar Advance. Regardless of the trim, the driving experience is characterised by smoothness and ease. The car never feels sluggish, even with its focus on efficiency. It is well-suited to the demands of daily commuting and general use, offering a reassuringly refined and dependable performance.

Conclusion

The Honda Jazz e:HEV stands out as one of the most practical, dependable, and likeable small cars currently available. It successfully combines sensible, economical motoring with comfort and versatility, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of drivers. Its efficient hybrid system, spacious and flexible interior, and user-friendly features contribute to a highly recommendable package for those seeking a well-rounded supermini.
